So it's time to change my car soon and I had my heart set on a focus as wanted something practical for the wife during the week but also something fun for me at the weekends.

Golf and focus are similarly priced when both specced manual but focus comes full leather as standard which would be nice. I don't think I could afford the golf with leather. Would probably try get the dsg if going vw.

Fuel costs are not really a issue as pay very little but obviously the golf would be much cheaper to run.

Service costs etc would be the same I guess as would only need to service once before changing cars again after 12 months and both would be in warranty being new.

Both have similar spec levels apart from the leather I've noticed.

The VW I'm guessing is a better quality car in general.

Only downside I can see is the fun factor.

What are your views?

Depends what you want?

A hot hatchback or a Diesel golf with a bodykit?

Would a Golf GTi not be a good second option??

A diesel Golf with 150bhp or a petrol Focus ST with 246bhp. Seems a strange choice to decide between.
You either want power and low MPG or you don't :p

Already said fuel isn't an issue so seems a bizarre choice. Focus ST-3 every time if a GTI isn't an option.

if you're not set on a hatch check out the Octavia VTR, if you are the Leon FR 1.8 petrol although you don't seem to get many of either with full leather, but the price is similar to the ford but with the price of the golf

For a hot hatch it has to be petrol tbh or it just doesn't feel right. This is an odd choice comparison :P

Theres also the Fiesta ST, which is probably the best hot hatch on the market right now. Loads of fun AND cheap to run. Plus lots of tuning options.

I assume we are talking new, otherwise its an odd comparison.

New, im not a fan of the Focus, i think they have gone backwards in interior design, the older ST3 was a quality place to sit with the leather recaro's etc. Engine was a great sounding lump, but ultimately a big lump of iron that made the car a bit lardy imo, but still a great chassis, ride and handling. Steering feel and gear change are the positives. The MK5 golf was better than its predecessors but it was still a incredibly dull car to drive, unless it was a GTI.

i would look at the new leon cupra 290 which is almost touching the Golf R in performance, many deals still around and stay away from the diesel's for now until dieselgate investigations finish as i believe this has only just touched the surface.. :)

Would definitely be the petrol version. Mpg is not a problem I get a tank for around £15 in Germany.

Don't really want a vrs as loads of people have them who I work with and they seem to have not been updated in awhile rather something that has had a more recent facelift at least.

Think I will get quite a bit more for my money with the ford and be a lot more enjoyable to drive.

Going to try get toa ford garage to test a petrol St.
