Hi

I'm not happy with Microsoft, forcing windows 10 on me. I prefer windows 7 on my desktop PC. I had disabled the KB 3035583 patch a few months ago on all my computers. Now Microsoft has released it again & it has overrided my hidden option.

I don't want to be stuck with a windows 10 upgrade screen on my windows 7 PC.

I'm very lucky my desktop computer is backed up using macrium reflect, I have gone back to a old image file.

I will be turning auto update off now on all my computers!

There is now two hidden updates for the KB 3035583 patch, released by Microsoft.

This update installs the Get Windows 10 app, which helps users understand their Windows 10 upgrade options and device readiness

Hardly forcing anything on you now is it. A small app which gives you options over the future of your operating system. Given that all OSes have limited life span I feel MS are being thorough in ensuring everyone runs a supported (and thus more secure) OS. The more informed you are the better.

I can see it from both angles tbh, I agree with the OP - If he's hidden it then it should remain hidden, that's one of the wonders of PCs, they're highly configurable by local/domain admins.

However it could be argued that MS are trying to point out that Windows 7 will go end of support in the not too distant future, Windows 10 is also a cracking OS - unless you've got legacy applications that need to be fully tested (NHS seem to have a lot of these).

Sadly I think we'll see more of this sort of thing in the future especially when most people are on Windows 10 (unless they opt for Linux).

Although I agree that Windows 10 is a very good OS and that people should install it, I do not agree with Microsoft forcing it down people's throats. I agree in the icon popping up to tell everyone is informative. What I do not agree with is it not being easy to get rid of (by that I mean "Right-click + hide," so it is easy for most users) and then those of us who have (my main laptop I do not currently want Windows 10 on) do not want it to come back.

Some people just don't want Windows 10 full stop and are happy with what they have got. Why should they be nagged constantly to upgrade when they do not want to?

For the record, Windows 10 is happily installed on my main PC and a spare backup laptop (which also is in the fast ring for updates). I am not against Windows 10 in general, I can just see it from both points of view.

Because Microsoft wants to tap into the defence budget as much as possible. It's the only reason Microsoft are absolutely jamming Windows 10 down everybody's throats and calling it "FREE", trying to get unwitting people to accept the upgrade. And every time some poor sod accepts, MS gets a lovely chunk of defence budget.

Win 10 is not "free" lol, you just don't pay cash for it. Anyone who believes anything is "free" is a bit silly really, nothing is ever "free", you just pay for it using other means.

Basically, you don't have to pay for Windows 10 using cash because you can pay for it by relinquishing your privacy.

That's nothing MS have also earlier this year released several Win 7 patches which contain telemetry data gathering for Win 10 upgrades. You need to uninstall I think its at least 4 different Win 7 optional updates which are disguised as performance updates which gather data from your PC

You need to remove these from Win 7 if you are not interested in being reminded of Win 10 upgrades:
KB2952664
KB3022345
KB3068708
KB3068708

Then these 3 which do mention Win 10 somewhere:
KB3021917
KB3035583
KB3012973

Then you still need to do several other things to remove all GWX folders, reg entries, autostart services & or other program hooks into being forced into updating or downloading the Win 10 OS install. You will need to find yourself its way too much info to put here.

Until I had to do this on my main Win7 PC I would never have believed MS would try to conceal/deceive users in this manner! MS have also removed all useful Win 7 tools & they are also trying to remove a lot of other Win 7 data from their servers. You will struggle to find any Win7 updates/service packs anymore on a public server they have all been removed to hidden parts of MS network for sys admins only access!

Win 7 updates also no longer work as intended either it usually hangs for ages then either stops or does nothing you have to manually coax these so called essential updates into installing. This can easily leave home PC's in an unstable/broken state.

Disable recommended updates.
