Hey guys, anyone have any experience of this type of thing? i need to commission a logo for my friends startup, she cant spend loads but will pay. Ive looked at the "pro" services like 99 designs and crowdspring etc but im a little reluctant to give a proportion of the money paid to a third party when the internet must have better ways for cheaper work to be commissioned with a direct payment to the designer. Plus these services seem to expect businesses with a bit more of a budget than a startup.

Opinions and ideas please? Im fairly certain OCUK doesnt allow crowd sourcing for cash on its forums as i think i asked for something like this many years ago.

Thanks guys!!

People Per Hour usually has some good deals from decent designers, just do your research and check past work first

As a designer I (and many others) absolutely detest crowdsourcing, it's devaluing the field of work and training that goes into it. You wouldn't do it with builders for example so why is it acceptable to do it in another line of work.
Creating a logo or more accurately the branding and visual identity of a company is not a simple job where anyone with a 'copy of photoshop' can do it.

As to using the forum for 'crowdsourcing' you're right because there is a rule about not advertising etc (no promotion of business interests). Although I'm sure you will find lots of talented people on the forum who aren't 'advertising' because they follow this rule.

Agree, its like telling 5 brickies to do a section of a wall and then paying for the section that you like best.

In theory you won't find them if they follow the rule ;)

I have used an OcUKer for logos/re-branding and was extremely happy with the results. Feel free to contact me in trust if you want his email. Can't for the life of me remember the user name

Apples and oranges. Logo design is something anyone with a modicum of natural talent can compete in, because the product is subjective. Building work is on the whole, not.

Its not a simple as "designing a logo" trust me.

That's quite cool. How did you get into graphics design?

Always enjoyed photoshop, editing etc.

Done it loads in my spare time. But obviously to do it as a job you gotta do some proper lessons / take it to the next level.

Thanks! Its just something I really enjoyed, I never took any lessons apart from tutorials and tinkering (over 6 or so years), would consider myself advanced in photoshop/illustrator/3Ds Max. I do work in design/marketing full time now though.

Our company use some website, something like a design competition. You submit your brief and people submit designs. Then you just pick the one you like. Quite cost effective.

Clearly you are not getting the talented designers but designing a logo isnt "that" hard.

Unfortunately its not my area at work so cant remember the name......:p

there are website that you can pay less than £5 for a logo. people here hate them but beggars can't be choosers. send your friend there if she is on a budget.
