4k gaming SLI 960's or 980

Well, I guess it's very much dependent on what settings you like to run in games, but even so, I would have thought you'd be miles better off with a GTX980 or equivalent.

Either setup would only really run games at medium settings at 4k, maybe even a touch lower if said game was particularly demanding...

4k is a *serious* resolution bump, made for *serious* wedge tbh ;)

(980Ti's in SLi just about manage it for example)

2gb 960's will run games at lowest settings as it will run out of vram in every game any higher.

980 will do better but doesnt have the power for 4k.

You need any of the below to run at high settings
980ti
Sli 980's (vram will be an issue though)
390 crossfire or better
Fury x

I'd go for the 980 personally, see how it goes. You may need to dial down some settings to get things working at 4K, but it will work.

If you want to SLI it later on, you can get a cheap 980 and ramp up the FPS.

980 is not bad at 4k some games you can max some you need to definitely turn off AA and use high settings. Ambient Occlusion usually needs turning off too.

As you are using a TV then you will probably be okay with 60hz as that will be what you are used to. Thing is not all games use SLI so one 960 at 4k will struggle.

980 will be fine providing you turn down the odd option.

Have have 2 970's and they can't really run AAA games properly at 4k. A 980ti is a tad slower so even that wouldn't be enough. I would say 2x 980 2x 980ti is required if you want the fps and the eye candy.

I had 2x 970s which sucked at 4k to be honest and was a stutterfest (3.5GB VRAM FFS)
I had 2x 980s running 4k games pretty good till they hit the VRAM limit.

My TX's totally destroy games tho :D
So 2x 980ti's are your best bet.

While I agree that 4K needs more GPU power than the OP has suggested, I don't agree that SLI 980Tis are required. I managed to run most games at almost max settings. Only dropping silly effects such as Blur, DoF and running some settings at high rather than max (eg shadows).

As long as you don't demand all settings maxed out then a single R9 Fury X or 980Ti will suffice.

OP, I used a single 980 and it came nowhere close to running 4K and I had to drop to lower resolutions to cope.

I have had to replace my tv with a 55" 4k, should I just add another 960 in SLI or sell the 960 I have and get a 980?

Go for the 980 - see if you can stretch to the 980 Ti. Older games will run at max settings at 4K on a 980. The Witcher 3 will cripple SLI Titan X cards if Hairworks is enabled.

980Ti with HDMI 2.0 if you want 4K at 60Hz.

AMD do not support HDMI 2.0 so forget their entire range unless your TV has a DisplayPort.

Cheers guys, looks like a 980ti then :)

As mentioned at least it givens me a decent upgrade path whereas the 960 is a dead-end.

Anyone want a month old 960 ?

SLI GTX 980 Ti is your only option that means water cooled as well or lots of fan noise & thermal throttling plus a motherboard with the space for 2 x GTX 980 Ti's & plenty of room to let the cards breath.

I run a single GTX 980 Ti its not nearly enough for many games in 4K on my Phillips 40" BD405. All depends on the game engine.

Mad Max needs more than a single GTX 980 Ti @ 4K.
Batman Arkham Knight is fine on a single GTX 980 Ti @ 4K.

Plus consider if you run SLI GTX 980Ti you will need that strong PSU to go with it. 1000W Platinum minimum but if the cards OC it can go way higher plus factor in all PSU degrade over time & a blown PSU is better/cheaper than a blown motherboard/GPU.

You will not get much change out of £1300 thats if you have the motherboard + cpu to exploit SLI GTX 980 Ti @ 4k otherwise throw another £600-700 on top of that to around £2K.

4K gaming with decent FPS is not cheap at all!!

Personally I'd go 1440p, lowering settings and getting very close to 1440 quality, which to be honest isn't far from 4k. Not going to be nice <60fps on 4k. If you do decide on a Ti get a good card cooling wise as it will be really pushed all of the time at maximum usage on 4k producing hot temps. Plenty of airflow through the case etc.

It depends what you mean by "playing 4k"

I faired just well at 4k (single 980Ti) by knowing I wouldn't be running max settings with 8x MSAA and super duper HD textures and such - If you take that into consideration a 980Ti is just fine for 4k at the moment. If you must have 8x MSAA and everything on Ultra then yeah, SLI 980Tis (and if you really want 8x MSAA you are going to have fun with your 4 way Titan X setup) and such is where you're heading, but if you don't mind high, 2x MSAA in some games, etc, then you will do just fine with a single 980Ti at the moment.

Anyone willing to spend £400 on a GTX 980 should not buy a 980, but instead save £100 and buy a 980Ti, it's just not worth its extra £170 cost over a R9 390, or 970 if you want to stay Team Green.
