Has anyone gone in head first to switch careers?

Random question - I'm presently studying for the GMAT and it is a ball ache to say the least.

Has anyone else packed it all in - and taken a huge risk - and come out on the other side? Did it pay off? How did you deal with the dark, demotivating moments..
 
Currently doing it (along with own house to pay for etc!)....

Took voluntary redundancy from guaranteed job (always other jobs in the company they wanted me to do). Enrolled at college full time with a view to Uni next year to become a Physiotherapist.... I struggle with demotivating moments at times(only been there 4 weeks! lol) but I have to cut myself off from everybody and focus on my end goal!

I don't know anybody who has gone through the same as me so it's all on own as others don't understand.

You do know in all likelihood you are going to die and not return, by my calculations you only have 58 more years to go.
 
Yup went from a Prison Officer to an IT Manager.

Took a pay cut for the first year and now I'm on the upturn. Going from daily violence and the bullying/criminal culture that Prison is to saying "have you turned it off and on again".

Granted the work I do now doesn't give me a huge adrenaline rush but it's safe and secure and I have learnt a lot. Plus it is more progressive in terms of pay and rewards.
 
Went from generic disposable office bod (seriously, I got made redundant 5 times in 2 years), to an engineering officer in the merchant navy, where I find myself working on tankers for an oil major. It took me 3 years training as a cadet to get to where I am, surviving on crap wages and living in either dilapidated halls or squalid student flats when I was in college and not at sea.

Whenever I found myself wavering, I just kept my mind on the prize at the end.
 
Went from a 'career' in sales to be a web designer/developer just over 2.5 years ago when I was 32.

Best thing I ever did, much happier and the pay is better.

Where are you looking at to go study medicine?
 
Went from IT to RGN about 5 yrs ago as I want to emigrate and all going swimmingly.

Sucked being broke for 3 years of training though, but was worth it.
 
Went from generic sales and marketing job to teaching ICT, computing and business. Got made head of department last year after 4 years and enjoying it so far!
 
Way back during college I decided I didn't want to be a Civil Engineer after all. Intended to just switch to an IT related course but took a gamble and went for a fairly low position but with training offered in a Network services company.

Had to stick with a low salary for a few years but received some good training and qualifications then switched to a growing IT training company. Been with them for 20 years this month and still learning something new each week!
 
Very close to switching to semi-retired which in essence implies binning my beleaguered and stagnating IT career to stacking shelves at local DIY emporium. Quite looking forward to it!
 
In the middle of trying to switch careers at the moment after taking time off for a career break.

I'm finding it very difficult and demoralising.
 
Yep, went from business/marketing/HR/accounting to medicine in my late 20s

Really enjoying the move. Glad I chased my dream
 
After years being stuck in a rep job I hated and trying to get into a very specific role in the NHS, I was getting disillusioned. 3 years of applications, some interviews and getting experience in my spare time and getting slightly closer but ultimately nowhere. Quit my job at the end of July and applied for another opening in my ideal role two days later, got an interview and a second interview and today was my first day in the job!
My perseverance and self development paid off. It's a trainee level job in the mortuary and learning about some absolutely fascinating stuff. I was up against 74 other applicants, mostly with forensic science degrees which I don't have.

My other job on the other side was breaking my soul down more each day. Already the best move I ever made.

Cool a fellow ex-screw! Getting out of that rats nest (the staff not inmates) was the best thing I ever did, I went back to uni to do social work and now loving going to work even if the stakes are a lot higher than hmps

Best day of being a screw was the final walk out of the gate. Most of my shift kept saying how the grass wasn't greener. Clearly shows how Prison on either side can change your mentality. They were clearly institutionalised.

The grass is much, much greener!
