Hi, thinking about upgrading my graphics card from a 7970 to a GTX 970. Is it a worth while upgrade do you think? I simply can't afford to pay over 400 quid for a GPU so this seems my best option.

What do you think?

Cheers.

ive got the 7950 and I'm thinking on going to the GTX 970 also. Im the same as yourself and cant afford to drop a load of cash on a card and ive been doing a bit of reading up and the 970 seems to hit the sweet spot at my budget.

Ive looked at a few reviews and benchmarks and yea I would say it would be a worthwhile upgrade even from the 7970 the r9 390 comes in slightly higher to the 970 on some benchmarks and some games but again its priced a bit higher.
but then the 970 also scores higher on other tests..

its a upgrade, however is it worthwhile .. thats the problem .. personally i would go for it ... your never gonna get a massive improvement with any gpu upgrade .. the difference will be with the ability to apply AA and AF ...

Im in the similar situation too. Using a 7950 and considering an upgrade. My current card runs games really well though so I'd only be looking at increasing AA or turning up a couple of settings from very high to ultra on a few games etc

the main reason Im thinking on upgrading is my sons pc that we built together out of my old parts is running with an old gts450 2gb and it does fall short for some games.
so if I upgrade my 7950 will then head to his machine.

I do agree the 7950 is still a good card and does a grand job on most games.

Why not add another 7970, can be picked up for less than £100, the only thing you will need is a power supply what is 850w.

I did have 2 7950's running in xfire in my last build and for running benchtests it was giving really good results but I found in certain games it ran better with 1 card than both cards.

in all fairness now that ive got the 4690k I do regret selling my 2nd 7950 as I would have liked to have seen if they would have ran better with this than the FX 6350 I had at the time.

Yeah some games dont like xfire, call of duty mainly.

before i had my 8350 i had a 6300 @4.8 but i did see gains in getting the 8350.

I upgraded from my 6350 to the 8350 after I sold my 2nd 7950 but sadly the 8350 died on me a few month back and I was using a 1090t to keep me running.
I got a wee bonus off a job so decided to find out if the Intel hype is true and jumped ship over to a i5 4690k so far im not disappointed.
will hopefully be getting a replacement fx8350 so will be good to see them running back to back and see if there's much difference in it all.

I've got a 7950 and an upgrade itch.

I'm not going to scratch until next year. There's supposed to be some big improvements on the way.

Imo a minimum of 30% is a noticeable difference which is what you will see. Those 970s will clock high too so you will be pushing + 50% after that.

If you don't want as much outlay, 2nd hand 290/X is about £100 cheaper than 970 new and has more or less the same performance.

imo don't do it unless the upgrade costs are minimal. While it's certainly a leap it's not a huge one. My 7970 gamed perfectly at 1200p and in the titles i play with some obvious exceptions did remarkably well at 4k.

If you're going to make a leap, do it cheaply or do it so it counts.

Need to get posting more
this is true..
but I don't want to be posting spam and would rather post on topics that interest me and I can put in some useful input or info.

I do wish I had more knowledge so I could give more input but I must admit I mainly read and try to learn :)
