If you had £300 to spend what would you buy?

As the title says, I am looking at a new card, around the £300 mark (+-10%) and am interested in ideas for what card to get. I game at 1080p normally but do have a second 1080p monitor for 2560x1080 gaming on games it works for.

Currently to me the best card seems like a 390X at around £320 for the money but am willing to be talked into anything else.

Thanks for any input.

Used R9 290 and save the extra £150 for the next gen, I brought mine last April and I am still really happy with it.

You're saying the 390X isn't worth an extra £50 or so over the 390?

Considering you only get an extra 5%-10% boost from it at maximum you might aswell go and buy a really nice model R9 390 and overclock it.

A 390 can be had for £240-£270 and will be within 5%-8% the performance of the 390X. Overclock the 390 and you essentially have 390X performance for around £100 cheaper. The 390X is also good if you can get one for £300-£320 and is on par with a 980 and sometimes faster.

Noise wise the 390X is not too bad if it is an MSI or a Sapphire. I think Asus and Powercolor may be a bit noisier.

Would a 390 noise/temp wise be better than a 7970 ? I think you need to be careful in your choice.

I am pretty sure with the standard cooler being far superior to the 7970 standard cooler, I wouldn't be hitting 90+ degrees like I do with the 7970 but I know what you mean.

I have checked many reviews and the load temps seem a good 20C or more lower than what I get with my card just now.

I am still unsure whether a "good" 390 is better for the money than a triple fan 390X like:

The price difference is literally £30-50.

Thanks but it's pretty pricy for having next to no warranty.

The Sapphire Tri-x is probably the best cooler for any AMD card and is supposed to be the quietest too.
The 390X is around 10% faster than a 390 so if the difference in price is around £60-80 then it is a decent deal. You want a decent jump from your 7970 so get the best you can afford.

This is kind of my train of thought. If the gap was more like £100 I wouldn't be considering the 390X but even from the absolute cheapest 390 I can find it's £80 and from better cooled ones it's more like £50.

I think OCuk handle their RMAs as Powercolor are hard to deal with directly as a UK customer, although its probably best to ask.

Thanks I will definitely keep this in mind. I may not be able to order from OcUK though because I lost my old account due to changing the default email and never getting a confirmation code. Now I don't have free shipping any more.

I will definitely consider it though, good card for the money.
