say compared to an r9 390 how fast is a 6990, reason im asking is prices of 6990s are quite cheap if you can find one and i'd be interested in having a play about at the right cost.

That's actually quite surprising, I thought it would have been close/slightly better than a 290 atleast.

It's based on tech 5+ years old, so it's always going to struggle to keep up with todays cards despite it being a dual GPU board. It was also soundly beaten by Nvidias GTX 590 at the time. From what I remember the 6990's were plagued with poor drivers and a fan noise that could wake the dead!

card is dead in the water I remember getting a cheap 4870x2 but due to no to little support it was rubbish.

Depends on what games and what resolution?

I just moved from 6970 xfire and it was quite a jump to say the least.

Need a decent psu too to run it...quality 850w with a good 70A on 12 rail

Ive got an r9 380 at the moment which for the price is quite a decent card, and I'm only at poor old 1080 still although I'll probably invest in something bigger soon.

I realise it would have been far from practical I just fancied having a play really :D

Coming from the era of "wow this 320x240 looks so awesome compared to the c64". I still can't grasp how far we have come. I remember upgrading from a 14 to 15.5 inch monitor and thinking it can't get much better than this. :).

Yeah, the 380 will perform better than a 6990 in recent games due to much more optimised drivers. When crossfire drivers are potentially giving the 6990 a hard time, the 380 would bury it.
