Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Well it sat there with 2 x 2TB HDDs in bays 1 and 2. Not doing anything - quite happy.

So I thought - I'll copy 1TB of photos (about 25MB each) -set it going - after 5 minutes it stopped saying could find a folder - one on the drives had disappeared. Rebooted and drive reconnected. Event viewer showed disk error.

SO - I shut down - put the same 2 drives in my Win 7 i7 pc on 2 SATA connectors. Set them copying - copied exactly same set of photos with no errors. Something amiss somewhere!

Going back!

Well I reset the BIOS by taking the jumper link off the board when powered down. This also removed the VID file so I had to restore Intelligent provisioning.

But since then (in ACHI mode) - 1 SSD Bay 1, 3HDDs (2x 3TB, 1 x 1TB) in Bays 2, 3, 4) it has been copying to and fro error free. Perhaps I had some corruption somewhere previously?

Now backing it all up to a 6TB USB3 drive - also OK - the 6TB USB3 drive made it run slowly before - now OK.

Well it's still going after 5 days - can even access the server on my Android cheapie tablet (on home network. Haven't tried via internet - not sure how to do that?).

On another aspect - have not had refund yet. I had email 23rd Sept saying payment has been approved and payment would be within 45 days. Anybody had their payment yet?

Sound out. Have 3 HDDs - Photograph back up, Music / film backup / general backup

Was annoyed on music etc. HDD that clicking on a file came up with "no sound device". I have a USB audio interface which uses native windows drivers - works fine - so now have sound out (if I want it).

Looks like I got my microserver just in time as the site I have bought it from have discontinued it.

I had my refund confirmed this week after chasing them up on it. Just as well I saved a copy of the email address you need as there seems to be no other contact info and it's not HP directly who are dealing with it. Despite wanting it put back into my bank rather than a cheque was told it could still take up to 45 days.

If anyone wants the email to chase their refund up let me know.

I've heard/seen nothing on a Gen9 Microserver!

The chap we use to purchase HP hardware at work hasn't heard anything about the Gen9 or Gen10 Microservers either, even after directly asking his HP 'contacts'.

I fear this is the end of the line unless HP are really keeping it tight lipped.

They don't always do releases at the same time. Might be a while away yet!

I think the most powerful low profile card is a 750Ti isn't it?

MSI do a single slot version (the Gigabyte is double) but it looks like the cooler sticks out a fair bit. Plus it's a 300W minimum PSU requirement, so with an upgraded CPU that's way over the Gen 8's capabilities. Upgrade time. :D

Yeah after more research I don't think you can get "low profile" and power draw makes it beyond the what the Gen8 can do.

I'll stick a 750TI in it ;)

Struggling to find a low profile single slot 750TI

Found this one, I guess this would be OK

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti N750ti-2GD5TLP 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

Still going And refund on way.
So if anybody gets issues seems like a BIOS reset is the cure!

I've not done it personally, however the Server 2012 drivers *should* work, but you might have to point the hardware wizard at the INI files rather than using installers. (you also might need to unpack the installers to get them out)

I think I will leave well alone - not sure the Microserver is designed for or will like win 10! Or I would know how to do what you think may be necessary!

Thanks
