Hi,

Just noticed that my system is showing as only 4gb available, im running two 4gb strips......

Any ideas? Might be the cause of the problem i detailed in another thread.

What version of windows do you have.

If you have onboard gfx that can take a chunk for itself, but certainly not 4.5Gb worth.

Does CPU-Z show there are two sticks fitted?

sounds like you are running s 32 bit OS and not 64 bit.

a 32 bit OS has a limit of 4GB regardless on how much is installed, to use the full amount you will need a 64 bit OS

Well that sucks, in two years, that the first ive actually ever noticed it saying that.

Windows shows as 8gb installed, but 3.46gb available. First time ive ever seen it!

Im sat here now.

Windows10.

16Gb fitted.

Task manger is saying I have 5.6Gb left and 10Gb is in use, and the PC isnt doing much apart from browsing.

what OS are you running? every 32 bit OS has a max ram amount of 4GB. should say what version on the same page you see the ram

my home PC has 6GB running a 64 bit OS and my work PC has 8Gb on windows 7 64 bit as well

will my product key be usable for a 64 bit edition???

Im trying to recall what one i purchased.

Im 80 per cent sure i would have bought 64 bit edition, as i remember buying the pc parts (built this myself) for gaming, and i would have checked the versions/memory compatibility.....

was it a retail copy of windows 7? as this comes with 32 bit and 64 bit DVDs.

i have a OEM version of windows 7 that came with 32 bit Windows but downloaded the 64 bit and installed with my key with no issues

im such a fool.....

I just checked my invoice from 2014....... it was the 64 bit edition i purchased, but i went and installed the 32 bit version of windows!

D`oh!!!

Thanks for help folks, ill re-install again.

Solves pretty much all the issues i was having in my other thread.

if i upgrade to windows 10, the free update im being offered? Will this use my memory? Or does windows 10 come in 32 and 64 bit editions?

it will install the same version you have on at the moment, if you have 32 bit windows installed you will get Windows 10 32 bit which will not fix the issue

should be fine once on the correct OS and will allow you to then use more ram as well :)

what do you use the PC for? gaming\video editing?

yeah, gaming mainly. Although not played in ages, was mainly for Rome 2, but been using photoshop a lot lately for a bit of web design, noticed when i was playing youtube videos it was freezing up, crashing etc.

Checked the memory and voila, only using half!

Wanting to start playing Rome 2 again though!
