Has anyone on here tried this?
Can it be done 100% 'glitch' free?
Is it better than using an external drive?

I have eaten through the 500gb already and looking to upgrade to 1 or 2tb. I cant decide whether to tackle an internal upgrade or just go external.

Why bother when you can add an external one?

No real performance difference from what comparisons I've read, if anything sometimes an external drive is quicker, depending on what capacity you use.

My internal HDD sounds like it's gonna break, I'd like to know if it's easy to change should it die out of warranty.

It can be changed I looked at doing it with a 2tb but it looked a pain in the butt using Linux and creating partitions etc. I just stuck the drive in a caddy and used USB and tbh notice no difference in performance....

no point in hybrid since the external drive will only have the games on it.

SSD is quicker, but obviously a 2TB conventional drive means you'll never have to worry about running out of space ever again, but a similarly sized SSD will be two times the cost of the console.

If you want more space, get a conventional one. If you want more speed get an SSD. If you're massively rich, then buy a large SSD.

Neither the Xbox One or PS4 support trim for SSD's so they end up a bit of a mess after a while.

Just get a 2TB drive for £60 odd and have plenty of space.

Ok cheers all, will hunt down a decent 2tb external drive. I'm guessing a 7200rpm drive would be better than a 5400rpm?

Ah good point, didn't think of that. Lucky I didn't start googling the best deal on an external drive before checking it's USB 3!

Indeed!

BTW, I got a Seagate one that spins at 5400. The reviews said it was still pretty fast though and they weren't wrong. Completely powered from the Xbox too

Was just wondering about 5400 rpm vs 7200, looking at ebay as theres a 20% of code at moment but most seem to not mention the rpm even in they have the offical page on the listing.

I have an external drive and it works fine but for some reason it seems to take longer to install games. I might invest in one of these at some point. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collective-Minds-Drive-Enclosure-Front/dp/B00T76ZGDO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

Ah, I had forgotten about these. The only thing that concerns me is the SATA to USB interface it uses. Is it any good? A branded external HDD will have the interface built in by the manufacturer and would reflect online reviews of the drives speed in speed tests. I wonder what brand/make of interface is in the Collective Minds unit?
