So I had a hell of a headache, Wednesday lunch-time, hurt like hell for 4 hours, nothing I took even took the edge off. After that the side of my face down one side felt a little numb, not unlike after having local anesthetic at the dentist at the point where it is just wearing off. Also felt like that in the back of my throat at one side felt a little numb too. Presumed it was a migraine, it didn't go away.

Yesterday evening I called 111, to ask for advice, they sent an ambulance and a first responder.

I had a battery of tests last night including a CT scan and was admitted. The CT scan showed nothing of note but was accompanied with a disclaimer in the notes that I may have had a mini stroke. Today had further tests, blood results showed I have a high white cell count indicating as I was told that I may have been fighting an infection. Chest X-ray was clear, also had an MRI scan (50's scifi sounds in a giant helmet?).

Two different Neurologists gave me two different opinions on what has happened. First said it's possible I have had a mini stroke, 2nd was suggesting A-typical migraine. Nothing concrete ATM, I was discharged this afternoon, have to go back to see one neurologist for a follow-up on the MRI scan and the other told me he was referring me to the stroke team.

Face still numb/indistinct down one side but feeling has started to come back a little, same with the throat, still feel like I'm about to constantly dribble from one side of my mouth.

Feel like garbage but at least it seems as though it's not going to be serious.

"Usually" with migraine type conditions any peripheral effects like a feeling of numbness would come on before the headache side of it and fade away much quicker (usually before the knife to the head feeling subsides). Though I'm no medical expert nor intending that as anything other than commentary as someone who suffers from migraines - not advice. (Obviously if it was "a typical" the symptoms could be the other way around but I've never really heard of it being like that).

EDIT: Usual with a migraine though to feel like garbage (strong hangover like feeling) for around 24 hours afterwards.

Not medical advice but have you had your eyes tested of late? So many horrid headaches are linked to the eyes.

Sorry didn't read all of the OP or the symptoms so ignore above!

Erm. I'm not an expert, but shouldn't you have been referred to and seen by the stroke team straight away at the first suggestion of a TIA?

I think they pretty much had me covered in the immediate situation, the referral being for a near future appointment? I'm just going on what I was told today.

Good point.
If I don't wear my contact lenses then I automatically squint to improve vision. This must increase muscle contraction in and around the eyes; and I often get headaches.

I do wear glasses in some situations and my prescription is up-to date.

Feeling slightly better today, totally washed out and weak, feeling in my face has continued to improve, very slowly but still it's an improvement. The constant feeling that I am going to dribble from one corner of my mouth however has not started to improve yet. And I am quite conscious of actually do so from time to time which I find really annoying.

Have you ever known of cluster headaches? That's what it sounds like to me. They hurt real bad and I mean ice pick in eye stuff. :(

If it is in the corner of your eye and it takes you out period then its a cluster headache.

Look it up worst than child birth so they say.

I have had them and trust me you out for 20 to 120 min. Not nice.....

Probably start of flu.

Oh and are you getting enough sleep lack of sleep can bring on hellish headaches as can dehydration both of which if you do nothing about medication won't really solve.

^It's not flu.

Regardless, still waiting for the feeling to come completely back in my face and the dribbling from the corner of my mouth is really getting on my nerves but on the plus side nothing has gotten worse so I'm bearing with it and keeping positive.

Well good luck man, sounds like you are ok, but never-the-less hope you feel better soon. :)

It's good you called the doctor, my Grandfather had a TIA, didn't go to the doctor, then had a stroke a couple of days later, so you did the right thing.

Still have the numbness down one side of the face, that's not gone yet, and the feeling I'm about to dribble from the corner of my mouth is still there constantly. Getting on with things as normal though, just look at it as a minor annoyance. Plenty of time yet for it to come back as it should be.

On the plus side have appointments to see people in neurology mid December which probably indicates the MRI didn't raise any red flags and there is nothing to worry about or they would have had me back sooner.

it's not 'A-typical' it's atypical, as in not usual
this sounds more migrainous than cluster headache
numbness down one side and actual dribbling (weakness) from the same side of mouth would be an unusual combination as facial sensation is supplied by trigeminal nerve but facial musculature is facial nerve supplied - 2 separate cranial nerves

Damn man sounds awful, I've been having migraines recently that KO me.

I've also had eye migraines where I can't see out the peripheral vision on my left, I then get a banging headache after for about 30 mins. This has happened more frequently the last week and I've booked an eye test tomorrow as its been years since my last one.

Horrible feeling and feel for you.

The first time it happened to me was a few years ago and it happened at work with numbness and they thought I was having a stroke as it as my entire left that went numb starting in my little finger. Spent the following day in hospital having scans which showed nothing. Ever since then has a migraine a year but this year I've had more severe headaches happening recently.
