More of a rant than anything.

Went through a couple of X99 motherboards with various USB issues, and thought I was finally settled and all was good.

Then at one point I had the infamous 'Dead RAM socket' issues where I confirmed it was the slot and not the sticks, although it magically worked when I reseated the sticks. Fair.

Today it happened again, so I did the same stuff. No dice. Left one of the sticks out in defeat and suddenly my NIC doesn't seem to be working anymore. It sends packets out but won't receive any.

I think I'm going to ragequit and go Skylake now.

I feel your pain mate, had three X99 boards die on me so far, on my fourth.
If this dies I'm jumping over to Skylake for sure.

Yeah I think I'm done, this fail rate is just atrocious.

Maybe if the next X chipset is any good we'll see, but I won't be holding my breath. Skylake CPUs seem to have dropped in price now, so there's cost savings (as well as life expectancy) savings to be made it looks like.

As someone who lept on Skylake as it was new and therefore better, before researching and 'discovering' X99... I kinda smiled inside reading this... sorry >_<

Afaik the quad channel of the X99 boards causes the motherboards to be more complex to build and can lead to these ram issues.

The USB issues are annoying that they weren't picked up during QC though, but I guess most manufacturers have managed to resolve them with firmware updates now so it's not all bad.

@OP - What particular motherboard (or motherbaords as you've been through a couple by the sound of it) is it you have that is having these issues?

On a side note, I do wonder if there is going to be a 'slight' refresh of the X99 chip for broadwell-e or if the manufacturers with refresh their line ups, maybe added thunderbolt etc.

Mobo 1: Asus x99s
Mobo 2: MSI KRAIT
Mobo 3: Asus x99s.

On further reflection I think I'll just try again. Because reseating the RAM corrected the issue once before, it could be an issue of me over tightening something somewhere, so I'll keep that in mind. NIC is definitely done for though, so new board it is.

If you're wondering why I changed my mind? Because of that damn USB Type C on Z170 boards. I had a look and most of them barely have a decent amount of USBs, and I'm not buying a powered hub because I hate clutter; screw that. :p

What's the issue with ram? Recently i noticed mine was showing up 12gb instead of 16, i reseated the one in the 2nd slot and it came back then. Not sure if it just wasn't seated properly in the first place or what, but why would all of it show up before then?

Because it's intermittent, it is likely you have an over tightened screw. It could be a contact issue with your CPU due to over tightening the heatsink, or you might have screwed in a Mobo screw too much. Try loosening the one near the DIMM slot affected.

Mine were:
1. MSI Gaming 7
2. Asus X99-Deluxe
3. Gigabyte SOC Champion

Now onto an MSI X99A Mpower and praying for the best!

What issues where you having with the Gigabyte SOC Champion?, it seems to be regarded as one of the good reliable boards. Probably due to it not being loaded with tons of features that a lot of people don't really need.

I've had similar issues with other boards in the past - memory slots stop working.

The key is to loosen the cpu if possible - over tightening it causes the motherboard to bend slightly which in turn affects the ram slots.

hth

Well this sure scares me in my move to x99 lol

Same, just advised someone at work to build a X99 system , hoping the damn thing just works or I might be in all sorts of trouble!

Don't panic guys - I am sure it will work out fine. I think this is perhaps being a tad over hyped, although I appreciate it is very frustrating for those having issues. Touch wood my X99 has been great from day one.

Board basically fails with continuous looping of error codes before dying after shortly booting up.
Currently back at OCUK on an RMA.

I had a SOC FORCE that had to be RMA'd - thing just died on me a few weeks after building my full custom loop. Gutted because I flipped and stripped the whole thing. Now I have an ASUS RVE but it's on an aio cooler and my 980's are so loud... Sad face

Well I have gone for a Sabertooth Tuf x99 board so hopefully the fact that its got a 5 year warranty etc should mean I dont have any real dramas.
