Audi A1, opinions?

Not sure, but I know a lot of people have issues with some of the engines on the Polo. For starters some seem to go through a LOT of oil.

The early 1.4 TFSI 185ps engines had oil issues but this was fixed in the later 2013+ models.

Never had any oil issues with the 1.4 TFSI 122ps engine, and it is very reliable (with very few having any issues). There is also a 1.2 TFSI but to be honest I would just focus on the 1.4.

OP give us some more details? Budget?

I would look at the sport model since you get some nice extras over the SE model, including multifunction steering wheel, DIS, better seats etc. Would also recommend looking at an approved used Audi.

Friend of mine has one, 1.4 petrol, new model... very smart looking car actually, great build quality, comfortable, quiet and easy to drive, park etc. You pay the usual Audi premium over the likes of Ford, VW etc. but you do get what you pay for IMO, if the spec isn't too crazy... which is easily done if you buy new, so second hand approved would be the best choice. I'd definitely opt for an A1 over a Polo. The Fiesta would be an alternate choice if I was really looking to save though, as that is a great car for the money.

Expensive Polo but in need of an upgrade, it's old hat now.
It's loud inside, not something you expect from Audi and suffered from some interior quality issues, wind whistle and creaky centre console.

It's nippy and looks nice but I would advise just going for a Polo instead.

Can't add anything useful but I do want to say that I think they look awful. Something just looks wrong about them.

A massively expensive Fabia with a nicer interior. Is she really willing to spend that much more for a better instrument panel?

Thanks for the input so far guys.

Basically she is looking for something nicer than her current 10 plate fiesta. Likes the idea of moving up a marque as it will be likely be her last car before retirement and slowing down.

BMW 1 series is butt ugly, seems to be more expensive for a slightly older model, and most revolve around 1.6. Also a slightly larger class of car, focus, etc.

A1 we have been looking at the 1.4 TFSI engine as suggested, about 2 years old tops... she likes the idea of a bit of manufactures warranty left for her initial ownership.

She doesn't really need too many mod cons, DAB would be nice as it's the only thing she seems to use in the car... never even touches the air con. Nice seats would be a bonus, so it is a nice place for her to be.

A3 is a step up in size and price, she doesn'st like the idea of going to a larger car again, she has no need.

Cheers all!

Yep absolutely bonkers money - 12k for a 4 year old car posted above.....mental

A fabia for less money is brand new

And I could probably post a link to an A1 SE with zero spec for the same price as that fabia SE with zero spec...

OP, think you should just go check out a few A1s at your local Audi dealer and ignore the majority of people on here who have never driven/been in the car. The difference between the A1 and the polo/fabia is so much more than 'a better instrument panel'. They'll be suggesting 14 year old M3s next...

A little bit, but not enough to warrant the difference. I've driven a fair number of high spec A1s as courtesy cars, yet when it came to buying a car for my mother, we went Polo, as they represent better value for money, yet feel just as "quality" to the touch.

Granted the lack of MMI is about the only "downside", but my mother wouldn't have got to grips with MMI properly anyway.

What I didn't realise is that they do an S1 - with a 2.0L Turbo (At least I think it's a turbo) with 231BHP! They also do some special edition version in LHD only with 260ish BHP - in a car that size they must both really get a lick on, assuming it can get the power down. (Assuming it isn't Quattro!)

Which trim level did she go for?

I had an A1 while my sister had a Polo and the differences were quite noticeable. For starters the Polo had a plastic (soft-touch...ish) steering wheel/gear stick, while the A1 had leather (to me the steering wheel felt exactly the same as bigger/more expensive Audis). A lot of the interior materials were different too.

My dad has an S1. All S1s are quattro and it sure is a quick little beast, no issues putting the power down though I've only been in it as a passenger.

It is Quattro.

Is damned expensive for what it is though, you gotta REALLY like the car to pay out that much.

Seem to be very popular with the hair dressers and beauty ladies up the street from where I work, just had a look in the carpark and there's over 10 of them with different alloys / trim levels.
