Lords defeat government over tax credits cut

Two things
One its very unfair to suddenly cut peoples incomes this much no matter what a bad idea it was in the first place.
Two it shows how desperate they are to save money.

Many people will already be on 40 hours a week. When you have a family it is quite difficult to do more. Particularly for single parents.

well it doesn't really apply there - the people who you'll see an increase from are likely people not already doing 40 hours a week

Isn't the bigger issue the Lords overruling the government which was voted in? I can't think of other time in when the upper chamber blocked the will of parliament like this.

Which should surely point out what a massive ideological farce these tax cuts are?

They've blocked a strategic play by Gideon. All they want is a review of the consequences, which is clearly the sensible thing to do when it can affect so many families in such a negative way.

The Upper House haven't refused the cuts completely. What they have asked for is that there is a transitional protection scheme for a minimum of three years to protect low income families. That is sensible.

Here's what I predict is going to happen now:

The government will deflect the negative press about the tax credits and spin it instead, to be evidence of a clear constitutional crisis that needs to be dealt with. The conservatives will claim that it undermines their "strong" (37% lol) mandate for the British people and it is wrong that undemocratically elected people are holding the country to ransom which is rich when you consider that Cameron lied about it in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tories try to spin it so that the Upper House are 'as unpatriotic as Corbyn' and punishing hard British workers.

It is a very peculiar state of affairs when the House of Lords are more interested in protecting the welfare of the poor than our own elected government. Surely this should demonstrate to people how much of a farce our current government are?

i don't understand why anybody agrees with giving benefits to people who are working - all it does is subsidise business by allowing them to pay reduced wages.

it was a moronic idea from Brown and costs a ridiculous £30 billion.

Lots of people get paid pittance! Not everyone is in super paying jobs

So rather than cutting £15bn from the most vulnerable, why aren't they chasing the £119.4bn in tax evasion?

It's an ideologically driven assault on the poor and it's easier to take from those who are less likely to fight back.

Considering the Government took the nurses £1,000 pay rise last year and now took £10,000 after the General Election.

No no no no no!

All Osbourne cares about is his surplus. If that means most of the country goes to pot to get his surplus, so be it. He'd rather burn them just so he can get his surplus.

Yep. Poor people can't pay for clever lawyers or give generous backhanders.

A breach of constitutional convention that costs taxpayers billions, how is that something to celebrate or applaud?

Roll on reform.
