hi all I currently run a 290x and I'm stuck between going for a cheaper option of going xfire with my 290x or selling it and going for a 390x

am I better of going the cheap route or xfire as I'm hoping to get a 4k screen after xmas once kids are sorted :D but it also puts me of going for a 390x and waiting for next gen cards

If its the standard 4gb 290x you will have the power with crossfire for 4k but will run out of vram for the power you have.

390x on its own will have the vram but not the power for decent 4k.

I woukd grab a fury / fury x / 980ti instead.

Get another 290X or sell and buy a 980Ti. That is what I would do.

Right now though I would get another 290X just to keep you happy with something new until 14/16nm stuff come out.

Crossfire is not perfect, but it plays most games fine. If you got the money and not bothered about waiting, then just get a 980Ti I would say. It is a beast of a card once overclocked and being it is only a single gpu, everything should just work :D

if I could stretch to a new ti I would have gone down that alley as I'm not a fanboy but atm I cant as only got £250 spare for a 2nd card :( I'm just wanting a cheap boost for battlefront if I'm honest for the time being and like I say going 4k in the new year

sorry to be a pain but would sli 970s be better than the xfire option ??? as I could get a new 970 and sell my 290 to fund a second 970

In that case you best bet is to get another 290x second hand if possible for about £150ish or so. Definitely not 970 sli though.

I am in the same boat as you mate, except i dont have the X :P
Currently im stuck between going crossfire or getting a fury.
Nvidia has put me off as i want to get an adaptive sync monitor and G-Sync prices are astronomical!!
Not only that but the GPU's already have an Nvidia 'overhead' on.
On fleabay (OCUK dont stock the 290 so i should be okay to talk about it) the prices of cards are through the roof! The cheapest ive seen is £190+£10 postage which compared to 6 months ago is £50 more expensive!
I am considering going either 4k or 1440p, what monitor are you looking at mate? What size? Also how close are you sitting? People saying things on 4k are too small puts me off but ive always liked the look of it! :p

yeah I know what u mean about bay prices, but like u say u cant get new ones now so they gonna hold the price on the second hand market
as for the screen I'm hoping to get the 40" phillips screen as the reviews seem good and the prices is silly low for what it is,as my pc is in our bedroom so it would be good for watching movies in bed plus the wife seemed happy with the price due to it being 4k ,I got a pretty big desk which is a bonus too for it :D

4k is amazing my 28" is brill wish i had g-sync now but dont really notice any taring tbh.

also will my xfx 850 be enough for xifre ?

Should be, but what may happen which happened on my 750w corsair hx psu is it will have to really ramp up it's fans to keep up making for a very noisy pc. Depends on psu I suppose, don't know if it will be the same thing for you, maybe the extra 100w cushion will may make a difference.

When I got my superflower 1000w psu my pc's sound output went down noticeably when playing games that used up both gpu's 100%.

@ avenged its the xfx 850 xxx edition

@ tna yeah ive read that it should be fine, but now the deal of the day has caught my eye with the 390x
