Just bought a Dell U3415H and have a Evga GTX 780 super clocked.

I'm a casual gamer and do more photo work video editing than gaming and I'm happy at 60fps

It arrives anytime today...ill do some testing with fps and see what I get ...but my question is what would I buy if I start getting 30fps drops...

Second hand 980 ?

A 780 will do the trick, depending on what games you play? You may find a few settings need to be dropped to get over 60, but you should be fine. Whats your specs?

You'll be fine you won't be able to max out certain games @ 1440p i.e TW3 or GTA5 but it'll play them quite happily.

Depends on your budget for what to get next, could always pick another 780 up and go sli.

It's in a micro atx build so no other slot

Depending on which 780/how well it boosts upgrading to a 980 wouldn't be a straight forward story - in situations where you were VRAM limited on the 780 there could be a big difference but in other cases much smaller gains or even no real gains at all.

780 does start to run out of puff once you go above 2560x1440 so you might find it struggles a bit.

I'm really excited to test...the 780 has only ever pushed 1080p so will be interesting to see if 1440p kills it.

I run mine on the ROG Swift (or did til I had to RMA it - still waiting on replacement) 2560x1440 and it works pretty well but the extra pixels on the ultra wide are definitely going to give a 780 a work out.

The best thing is for you to run a few games and see how they do on your new monitor. If you delay your card upgrade longer there is more chance your next one will be a 14NM/16NM which will be more powerful and have better DX12 support.

My 780's struggled at 2560x1440, I'd imagine you'd need to drop quite a few settings.

BF4 with ultra settings @ 2560x1440 in 64 player CQ large I don't think even drops below 60fps - definitely playable fps 99% of the time. Mine is running almost 40% faster than a "reference" 780 though (kind of funny seeing benchmark results not far behind or the same as initial release 780 SLI results).

My Classies where @ 1400/8000 and they struggled at times.

Just saying he'll need to reduce a few settings to get playable frames - game dependant.

Well I have installed the monitor and all I say is OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is literally mind Blowing coming from a 24" 1080P

Just fired up some Borderlands the Pre Sequel and was getting a solid 60FPS with everything maxed...Things dropped to around 48 when mega busy.

I'll fire up some Bioshock Infinite next.

Rocket league IS widescreen friendly, as is pretty much everything.
Fifa is the ONLY game ive came across, along with Heroes of the storm that don't exactly, fully work.
Fifa you have to have the game resolution at 2560x1080 (or 3440x1440) and then change the actual windows resolution to 1920x1080 (or 2560x1440) and it somehow goes normal on ultrawide!
Heroes of the storm on the other hand only offers 1920x1080 as the max resolution as apparently you can gain an advantage on UW! Hahahaha, CS:GO and LOL offer it but HOTS dont? Worst, most lazy excuse ever!
But yeah Ultrawide is awesome, although im only on 2560x1080 on 29 inch, it is still amazing!!
