Hi guys,

Anyone own a Dell 7130? (not the Atom versions)

Are you happy with it, as I heard the initial models had freezing & lag problems, was that ever sorted out?

Is it really loud when the fans kick in? Does it happen often?

Any other observations?

Thanks :)

We have about 40 at work, the 1080p, i5 variant with SSD's and 4GB ram with the keyboards.
They are up to bios revision A15 already which says a lot about the reliability of the device when they were released, considering they've only been out 18 months~.

About 10 have been back to dell because of lock ups, SSD's bricking themselves. Every time Dell have replaced the motherboard as this is primarily at fault i believe. Many are plagued with badly batched CMOS batteries, time and custom bios settings reset as a result. Some of the batteries discharge by themselves even when they are turned off.

When replaced, they are generally good all round devices but many users complain about the screen size, even though they picked them! I wouldn't recommend one for longer than 3 hours a day. The fans do rev up occasionally but nothing overly drastic tbh.

Thanks for the detailed info :)

I'm trying to decide if I should get the i5, 8GB, 256GB version, or try and save for the newer Core M variant? Though this is a lot more money?

I use both the 5130 (Baytrail) and the 7130 (i3 4030Y) versions on a daily basis.

The 7130 I have seems to be pretty rock solid, had it since day one, and only really had a few firmware issues, which were easily resolved. I think the i3 versions have had a lot less problems than the i5. Currently running Windows 10 Pro on it as a clean install, and needed to do nothing other than Windows 10 updates, and install the Wi-Fi drivers. Spec is 4GB RAM, and 512GB SSD (upgraded myself), and the WWAN module for 3G needs.

As accessories, I have the dock, which includes 3x USB 3.0, Ethernet, HDMI and DisplayPort, which connects nicely up to my dual Dell U2515H monitors. I also have the 'proper' keyboard with the battery, and that things is amazing get around 13-16 hours battery life, at reasonable brightness.

I also have one of the stylus pen things, which hasn't been used much tbh, but seems OK, but not amazing.

Overall it's pretty weighty with the extra keyboard attached, but it feels well built, and I love the fact I can swap the battery over if needed (I have 3 now :)) As per the previous comment, the fan does spin up, and is a bit whinny but only when being pushed.

Would I recommend it, I would say it depends entirely what you want to use it for, mines is primarily office stuff, but it does have it's legs stretched occasionally with the odd Lightroom image edit, and on occasion I'll plug in the the Xbox controller and Fire-up Burnout Paradise, or Civilization 5, none of which I find it particularity struggles with, assuming the odd drop in frame-rate doesn't cause irritation.

The secondhand/refurb prices on these i3/i5's are silly compared to what I paid new, so even if you did jump in with both feet, you might lose £50 all told.

Hope this helps :)

Excellent thanks, just pulled the trigger on a brand new i5, 8GB, 256GB for £380, any good?

Not too bad I guess, at least you get full Dell warranty/backup. An equivalent refurb if bought today would be £270, with 12 months warranty.

Once you've got it first thing I'd do is check the BIOS/UEFI is up to date, and that the touch panel firmware is at the latest revision also. Being a brand new unit I'd expect so out of the box hopefully. :)

I've seen the BIOS update on Dell's support page but I don't remember seeing anything to do with a touch panel firmware?

(Edit: Found it under Windows 8.1 downloads)
