R9 380 Or GTX 960?

What's the best brand cooler on the 290 or 290X?

Used for 1 month

I *think* the MSI is worst overall for cooling on the 290, BUT it is the quietest. I wouldn't mind getting it if;

1 - You run a more aggressive fan profile

2 - You never intend to Crossfire with it

If you're patient you'll find an X for £140-150

I've looked online and it seems MSI cooler fan fails quite often however what brand should I look for 290/290X that has a good cooler?

There are some good deals on the 700 series cards this week at OCUK. I've seen 780s at sub-£200 prices. If the OP has the extra wattage and space, go for the better, yet older card. Otherwise I'd recommend the 380 (though rumours say a 380X is coming), the 4GB versions of it are better value than the 960. The 960 does have the advantage in terms of power consumption and heat though. As I usually say, check out the benchmarks for the games you'll be playing, some games AMD is higher FPS and others it's NV. NV also has the GeForce experience features and sometimes there's free game promotions (none for either card at the moment). Buy off OCUK, you get free Next Day Delivery if you've linked your forum account and you can snipe the prices from sales.

Edit:
4GB for longevity, though there are killer deals on 2GB 960s right now. Here's a few links.

Unfortunately the old basket thing doesn't work anymore, since they updated the site, or the links would be better.

the r9 380 is kinda a nobrainer especially when you see in newer titles how the r9 380 smokes the gtx 960 by a lot

and it even overclocks very very good if you need it

After a day of searching for graphics card within my budget, I have found a MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr 4G for £165-170 used for 2-3 months which seems to be better than the R9 290/290X? If so is it worth getting?

Go for the 970, so much better than the 290/290X. Nvidia hardware is superior in every way. Perfect drivers are a guarantee with Nvidia.

Remember Black Friday and Cyber Monday next month,so you might be able to get a good deal.

Also,I would also check for an EVGA or Gigabyte B-Grade card, once OcUK sort the website,as both Gigabyte and EVGA said they will handle the rest of the warranties.

If you look hard enough, I am sure the Nvidia card of your dreams can be found. After all Nvidia are great value and love to be competitive on price.

lol, Nvidia or not it matters little. Unless he's planning on going crossfire then whatever is the best card he can get is more important than petty fanboy ideals. If the Nvidia card is better for same price then fair enough but if not then the Nvidia factor isn't going to make a worse card suddenly better.

The Tri-X is a much better cooler. Easily worth the extra £20. As for £180 as a general price for a used 290X, it's not bad, depending on the condition of the card. Overclock it a little bit and it'll offer the same performance as a £300+ 390X.

I'll pass on the XFX and try get the Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X card as it seems to be the best out of the 290X for cooling and noise

I know it'll sound like a broken record but the 290x really does run ridiculously hot and loud. Are you sure you don't want to go nvidia?
Within my budget, I'm getting my money's worth from the 290X performance than Nvidia cards

Not that I'm supposed to do this but again if you go to a certain site named after a jungle they have the r9 290 tri-x used for £186, 30 days to return the card and a full 12 month guarantee'd refund should it go pop. Also to the business of a 970 gtx being better, its simply not, look at the latest reviews on new drivers.

It's also no noisier than the majority of cards:
