Hi,

So I bought the ROG Swift PG278Q after a lot of thinking and research.

I went from a QNIX QX2710 which doesn't support 3d Vision. Bought the glasses and everything so I needed a 3d vision ready screen.

I knew that if 3d Vision wasn't that great I would still have the G-sync and the 144hz to be happy with.

A lot of people were complaining about all sorts of issues with 3d Vision. Inverted pixels and visual artifacts which ruined the experience. Headaches after short periods, annoying reflections. So I was prepared for the worst. Also moving from an IPS to TN panel was another fear I had.

So here goes.

3D Vision.

3D Vision is incredible, literally. Some games more than others. Some games are disappointing (such as BF 4). Some have a few annoying issues like subtitles may not be made 3d so they need switching off. But some are mind blowing and I would never play the game without 3d ever again. Portal 2 is brilliant. You have to experience this game in 3d. Metro 2033 Redux is another, sonic racing, tomb raider. I am constantly adding new 3d must-play games to my list. It’s a great underrated technology. With the helix mods you can improve games sometimes to perfection.

For the first ten minutes I had a slight ache whilst my brain got used to it. Now I can use for hours without feeling any pain or discomfort.

I do not experience any inverted pixels or distortion or anything like that. I was looking for problems but could not find any.

I either got lucky with monitor or they have sorted out all issues for 3d.

The new drivers from Nvidia make sure you can’t select 3d vision and G-sync at the same time as I heard it caused lots of issues.

G-Sync

I don’t need to repeat other people too much. Gsync is incredible. For games like Madmax, Watchdogs and GTA V. I was already playing them at fairly high frame rates but with Gsync you experience a new level of quality and smoothness. It’s crazy playing Watchdogs at 144hz with G-sync. It’s so smooth I was amazed by the quality. Playing all games for the first time with G-sync is pretty exciting. How they’re going etc. Always impressed.

I think we all just get used to certain screen artifacts, the obvious tearing. But there must be a lot of other little glitches that are only noticeable when they’ve actually disappeared. Having absolutely no tearing and 100% silky smooth graphics is amazing. Getting this monitor feels like I’ve upgraded my whole pc.

TN Panel

Out of the box the monitor does appear VERY slightly more washed out than my old IPS panel. Not massively so. I’m going to try and tweak the settings to make the best of it. Even if I improve it only a small amount it will be getting close to the quality of the IPS. I really am not bothered by it. I was getting ready to be let down but I am not in the slightest.

When I’m playing games or watching videos I am generally very impressed with this panel.

Viewing angles are more limited. This is the only tangible limitation with my changeover to this screen.

Overall

This monitor is amazing, 3d vision is amazing, g-sync is amazing. 10/10. Happy customer. Speedy delivery from OCuk as well. Thanks guys!

Glad you are happy and got a good one. I also went from the Qnix QX2710 to the swift and it is by far the best monitor i have ever owned. Had them set up side by side and after calibration, the swift was very close to the qnix in terms of colours. I was amazed that a TN could look that good!.

I might have to dig out my 3D vision kit after reading your post. I've not actually used 3D vision since before i had the Qnix!

Have the same monitor OP and could not agree more with you, especially with respect to 3D Vision. I'm into racing sims and games like Assetto Corsa and even Codemasters F1 2013 are so much better in 3D. You can hit corner apexes and judge depth so much easier, I just don't get why other sim racers are not into it to the extent that you would expect. One of the best 3D experiences I've had to date has been Borderland 2 - the presequel - absolutely mind blowing!
It's a real shame that 3D Vision seems to be dying a death though, very few new monitor seem to support it. The one gripe I have is that the glasses become quite uncomfortable after a while (seemingly the version 1 glasses are more comfortable to wear).

To get rid of the washed out look, set gamma to about 0.8-0.9 in NVCP

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely give that a try.

Cheers.

Yeah you must. Play Portal 2 with 3d. You'll never play 2d again. You have 1440p now so it will be a new experience :)

Thanks for the opinion, was searching around for a review of the 3d but couldn't find anything considered or recent. May still be an option for the next monitor and if it is to be a TN panel then it needs the added benefit of 3d to balance against it's TN short comings.

Skyrim is a superb game to show off the 3D Vision. The feeling of depth when looking down a tunnel that's twisting away in the distance was worth the effort of setting it and patching the game.

Here's a useful link for Skrim or go straight to the.....

Sadly there wasn't enough support to sway me to keep my old Asus VG278 144Hz monitor and so I've bought a new monitor with no 3d Vision.
