Is this a worthwhile upgrade (answer tonight due to this week only deal)?

Hi all

I have a GTX680 lightning with a Asus P8Z68V mobo LGA1155 , 8gb ram and a i5 2500K overclocked.

I was going to upgrade my whole system but reading it appears my CPU and mobo can still run latest games. I have just purchased GTA V and often play BF 4 with no issues. Therefore Im considering a GTX 970.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade over my current GPU and am I correct that my CPU should not cause to much of a bottleneck?

Or am I wrong :)

Thanks for the quick responses. Think Ill look at the GTX980 8pack for an even bigger upgrade :)

Although my res is 1920 x 1080 on a Benq XL2411T

For me the 970 is not much of an upgrade the comparisons Arc@css compare a basic 680 with an upgraded version of the 970.
Comparing it with the 980 is a bigger upgrade but if it was me the 980 Ti would be the minimum I would want to upgrade to to see a significant difference.
A couple of things to remember there was no 8xx card and 6xx to 7xx the upgrade was not large, it was more to do with the card being a lot more efficient.

2500K is still a capable CPU, efficiency and new chipset features aside, very little progress has been made on the mainstream CPU's.

You def don't need to upgrade for any modern single GPU. If you just fancy an upgrade, X99 + 5820K would offer a more substantial update, more cores / threads etc.

Could always keep the 2500K for a bit longer tbh, wait for Skylake -E or beyond..

What am I reading here? Recommendations for a 980ti!!?? What not just get a Titan Z then if we're at it. :o

It depends on budget and resolution. To me the OP sounds like he has a budget in mind.

And yes a 970 is a nice upgrade from a 680. I had SLI 670 WF's which singularly where almost on par with a 680. The 970 was an upgrade over both my 670's in SLI.

You could also consider a 390 if you don't mind AMD.

You could take advantage of this 390 deal.

There do look like there are some deals on the 970 as well.

980 ti would be a better buy, but if a budget is the primary concern then a 970 would be a worth while upgrade.

The Titan is very little of an upgrade over the 980 Ti so I would not pick that one :o
I like big upgrades that I can see the difference and not have to bench mark to notice. The OP says his current one runs the games he plays with no issue, if he had a limited budget then waiting until his system does not run the games he plays without a problem would be a time to think about upgrading rather than doing it now.

Dunno if you understood his sarcasm mate haha, point is, he started at the 970 and people are now recommending the 980ti hahaha.
If i was you mate, id get one of the B-Grade 980s and a new shiny 1440p monitor to play games on :p

TBH the 980 isn't a huge improvement on the 970 for the price so I'd recommend sticking with 970 or an amd 390 but either one should do fine. The extra you could spend on getting a 980 can be saved for later, put towards other components or even just get a better version of 970 to overclock it better which will help bridge the small gap between the 980 and 970 but still end up cheaper.

Look at it logically and it will make sense to you.

980 Ti would be the wiser choice as it would be more future proof compared to the 970 hence why people are recommending it.

If it wasn't a lot to everyone op would have asked about which 980Ti to get.

He's also running 1080p=imo a **** +26% frame rate@double the cost that more often than not won't be noticeable/missed.

But it is, not everyone can afford to drop £400-600 on a GPU.

True but saving up a month or so longer is a better choice as I've said before it's more future proof compared to a 970.

It's very noticeable when you want to turn all the eye candy up and get a decent frame rate ;)

Anyway doesn't really matter what I say, It's just an opinion based on my past buying habits and realizing it's wiser to go for something more powerful by saving a bit more over a month or so.
