For anyone looking at getting a shiny carbon bike with discs and mudguard mounts check out the Jamis Renegade series - the Expert and Elite are both very nice bikes that tick pretty much every box you could want. The Expert sadly is equipped with HYRDs rather than proper hydraulics but having ridden on both HYRDs and Shimano hydraulics (and various cable disc brakes) the HYRDs compare very favourably to full hydraulics when set up correctly.

just picked up a Genesis Equilibrium disc frame up 2nd to build up as a winter/touring bike for £250. Think I'll go with mainly 105 kit with 685/785 brakes and use my Synapses heavy mavic one wheels. Probably about 10.5kg, should be good for a training effect :)

[*]The mudguards that would fit, are almost entirely awful

Hate to sound like a broken record but even with mudguard mounts on my Defy 1 I'm using and rate SKS Raceblades (which fit to QR, I've modified to fit to mounts). I've been through so many other pairs (even 2 specifically designed for the Defy by Giant) I can't see anything else being suitable, even the PDW full metal are not ideal due to the tight bridge clearances on the Defy.

In an ideal world I would have a CAADX (or similar) to be running 28mm tyres with plenty of guard clearance in the winter, without much of a compromise on performance. I would probably run SKS chromo's too (or have the option to over Raceblades for slightly better coverage). If I only had the 1 bike then it'd be Raceblades as they're so easy to remove for dry days (takes 2 mins).

The money and time I've wasted on guards, I'll only use SKS in future. Their customer service is fantastic too - they've sent me spare parts (free!) 10 months after I bought their guards and abused/wore out/broke parts.

TLDR; SKS FTW!

I <3 my PDW fenders. They're not light, but they're absolutely rock solid. I've had SKS guards break off after brushing past a bush, and I've had two pairs of SKS fenders snap completely. After all the faff I've had with plastic/chromo guards, I'll not cheap out again.

For £60+ a set I'd want them perfect, speaking to my LBS (and seeing them fitted to a Defy 0) I know they're not! I'd rather spend half the money and modify them myself (and then replace them when broken) ;)

Do you has a link to the exact ones? Sorry to sound like an ever more broke record ;)

SKS Raceblade Long (these are version 2, fixes 1 of the main issues I had with my V1's)

I rate my SKS Chromoplastics - 5,319 miles so far on my new bike and they're pretty much as good as new. I fully expect them to break around the 10,000 mile mark, if not before, but given how light they are combined with the decent coverage and the price I think that's a fair trade-off.

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two frames, in terms of their applicability as a fixie/SS outdoors road bike?

I'd prefer the "pre-cursa" purely on aesthetics, I don't want another matt black bike!

Edit: Bummer....precursa has no brake mounts!

Was just gonna say... No brake mounts.

You've got a drill, right? :p

For the wheels, do I have to be careful with track wheels to ensure that they have sealed bearings? Do all track wheels have sealed bearings? Not sure.

Just thinking about outdoor/wet weather use.

And the price is racking up rapidly but what I don't get is that it includes the choice of fixed wheel AND a freewheel sprocket, but when you look at the wheels I have no idea if they are flip flop wheels or not. Am I missing a trick here and ALL track wheels are flip flop or what?

So confused.

PROPER track wheels will be completely unsealed. Seals aren't needed indoors and they create a bit of drag.

"track" wheels are another matter

In what manner? I honestly can't fault them - great coverage, absolutely rock solid, only ~50g heavier than chromoplastics, easy to fit.. I actually can't think of a bad point, apart from the price.

Proper track wheels are most likely just fixed gear, because why bother with the weight of a freewheel side. Flip flop will almost definitely be fixed/free. You can get fixed/fixed or free/free but they're very rare.

You could get some wheels hand built for you. I'm going to build up a set with mavic open sport rims, miche primato large flange hubs and sapim spokes and I'm expecting them to cost £140ish in parts. You might be able to get a set of them built for £200.

Try singlespeedcomponents.co.uk - they'll do ambrosio excursion rims on miche primato hubs for £200.

Top marks for Decathlon customer service. I placed an order yesterday, then got an email today saying one of the reduced price base layers I wanted was out of stock. It turns out it was end of line, so they've got the new one in, but it is full price again. No matter, they're letting me have the new one at the reduced price.

Those the ones on road.cc yesterday?

Coverage and robustness of them is brilliant but I'm getting a bit of rattling. I reckon it's the rear guard buzzing against the underside of the caliper. I might try and find a way to isolate it and see if that helps.
