Car for around £4500 or less

I don't know why you'd spend that sort of money on those smaller models though when it gets you a more comfortable, better-specced larger car. That Fiesta especially seems awfully expensive.

About 1.5-2k needs to come off that Fiesta.... I'd rather have the generation after that for that amount of money.

I'm in the same boat as you. Got around £4500 to spend. FWIW I'm looking mainly at:

Toyota Prius
Honda Civic Hybrid
BMW 320d Touring
Subaru Outback

All of the above are within budget, are supposedly quite reliable, are very economical (with the 320d you ideally want the post-2008 Efficient Dynamics model, but that will be tough in this price bracket), are cheap(ish) to insure, and are a fairly decent size.

could consider a yaris 1.4 . looks tiny but inside is spacious, the rear seats you can bring them slightly forward/pull them back to adjust for the leg room. 60mpg + possible.

Just a word about insurance as Im a similar age and also looking at first cars. Avoid the Focus/Civic kind of thing - they still have a boy-racer image associated with them for insurers.

I found insurance on a 1.6 Corolla to be almost exactly half that of a 1.4 Focus, same with Almeras, Mazda 3s etc vs Focus/Civic.

This. Something like the Mazda 3 looks nicer (from the front, still not sure about the back on them) than a Focus and is a good £100-200 cheaper for me.

Worth bearing in mind you can get the 3 in hatch or saloon form too. Sport spec comes with a good amount of kit too, like HIDs, LED brakelights, climate control, auto lights/wipers, Bose audio etc. I don't think you get cruise on the 1.6, just the 2.0.

Ultimately that was the reason I went with one rather than Focus etc, the spec sold it for me.

Try an MR2 Mk3, the insurance is dirt cheap, tax is really low and economy is pretty good even with a heavy foot. Should be able to get a decent TF300 for that money and anything post 05 has the revised engine so oval bores wouldn't be a concern.

Op wants reliable and you're suggesting a fiat/alfa... :D

Had a MiTo for 3 years. Not a single problem with it minus incorrect suspension set up.

Awesome car. I really miss it sometimes!

Granted mine wasn't your standard MiTo...

Have you considered something like Smart cars as apparently there fairly cheap on insurance and running costs due to small engine
