Background: Being working for this company for just over two years.

Just had a substantial payrise two months ago.

Current company secretary announced his retirement today at the end of the year.

I have already been approached and asked if I would consider taking that role on, in addition to my current duties as financial controller.

I'm fine with that but have no idea what the current remuneration should be and how much I should be asking for! Help GD.

I can't go on the old CS as that's all he did and he was a retired teacher and family friend and just charged £10 an hour for his time.

SME size. And 350 sounds cheap for the responsibilities alone never mind the workload. Current retried teacher gets about 2k to 3k a year.

Okay I can't translate that exactly as I have been told that obviously in order to do some of the duties I will need to reorganise my work and pass some on to my junior.

Just surprised. If 350 is the going rate then so be it. I'll turn it down if that's all that's offered.

It doesn't seem like anything like enough and that is just one persons opinion.

I assume you agree with 350 then?

And chill out. If I posted a car thread where I asked how much my car might be worth and I was thinking around 2k and the first person said 350 wouldn't you expect the op to question it and ask why so low?

Sounds like it will just take up a portion of your time? You must have an idea of what the role entails, how much time it would take up, etc? Don't you just want to suggest a figure that would make it worth your time?

Well as already suggested by my boss I can offload some minor duties to other people to give me the time to do the CS bit. So perhaps it will not involve any extra time at all, just responsibilities and the swapping of lesser jobs for more important jobs.

Hence its tricky to put a price on it if no additional hours required.

If it was additional hours I'd want £5k just for the time plus more on top for the responsibilities.

I'd expect a company secretary for an SME to be earning about 75k-85k.

Errrr he says 'SME' not 'large company'. If its the sort of firm where the requirements of the company secretary were satisfied by a retired teacher happy to do it for a tenner an hour I somehow doubt it's going to pay £85k a year for the role:p

£14m turnover and 200 employees if that helps.

Retired company secretary been doing that since company was formed. He's in his 90s now. Was just two of them when it started.

Wow, so you'll have to get coffee and run errands for all 200 people?

Well, I guess some will want tea instead... ;)

'Help, im in a company that has 200 people £14m turnover and have no idea what my contribution is worth'

Probably severance once they work it out.

That's a bit mean. Like I said no time involved so can't go on cost per hour basis. I do know what I'm worth but this is just some extra responsibilities and to be honest a walk in the park.

Just thought I'd test the water for where I should be pitching be that free, £350 or several thousand.

And as usual GD delivers. Haribo it is :)
