Just returned from a weeks break, during which i put my car in for an MOT. The reason being, is that it was local to where we were staying and the test is due 1 Nov.

My nearest dealer at home is an hour drive and nowhere near the town, so everytime i take my car there, i end up having a few hours sat in a garage when i could be doing other things. I also prefer taking my car to the dealership especially as i have extended warranty with them. So, there's the back story!

Booked my car in at the Great Yarmouth dealership for yesterday and the family and i had the day at the beach. I get a phonecall saying MOT failed due to 1 x tyre :( and they had none in stock, only budget tyres. I prefer keeping same brand all round and non-budget. They offered Runways when i have Sport contacts all round. They said they could have the tyre i want today if i could get the car to them. We weren't planning on this, but decided we could drive the 30min back to Yarmouth and have an hour or so at the beach and then head off home. They said they would have the tyre by 9am.

We get to the garage at 9:30, no tyre delivered and they cannot get hold of the delivery driver, "but it's on its way". It gets to 11am, no tyre, kids are peed off and the garage closes at 12!

They again offer a budget tyre - no thank you. They then start calling around other tyre places - it's an 18" i am after and nowhere had them. They then offered to take one of the sport contacts off one of their cars!

I had a look and a 15 plate had a tyre with 6.5mm tread. The tyre should cost approx £128, but they said they would discount it and not charge labour etc. They would supply and fit the tyre for a total of £66 (£then £39 for the MOT).

Now bearing in mind my MOT expired the next day, i did not want a budget tyre fitted and the garage closed in approx 50mins, i felt the part worn tyre was my best option.

What should i have done?!

also you wouldnt of bin able to drive the car legally if it failed, other than to take it else were to be repaired or to have another mot.

Sounds like a fairly decent outcome.

The main reason why used tyres are bad - you've no idea where they came from and why they are for sale as 'used tyres' - doesnt apply here as you know exactly where the tyre came from.

Therefore a 6.5mm SportContact for £60 beats a brand new Runway at any price.

The mistake made was leaving the MOT until the last minute and not bothering to check your tyre tread frequently enough to realise you were driving around on an illegal tyre. You'll know for next time :p

That's a good outcome. This is why it is advertised you can mot your vehicle 10 days prior to the expiry date.

Concerned about matching premium tyres, not concerned one was illegal.

10 days? Try 30 days.

a lot of faffing around over nothing tbh. I would have taken the hit on a crap tyre and replaced asap after mot. Not worth the hassle.

Appreciate the comments, especially Fox. Blunt, but fair as per usual.

As for going for the budget, they wanted £75 for the budget tyre which would have had between 1 day to 7 days use depending on when i could get my motor to my local dealer and replaced. So i thought i'd get more out of the part worn.

My fault on the lateness - no excuse, but i have had a lot going on work/personal recently, hence the shabiness of my timing and lack of tyre checking.

Sounds like the garage were very helpful to be honest, I suspect it was the tyre supplier that let them down rather than the garage messing up.

I'd have been pretty happy with a very lightly used SC for half price.

Pretty much this, or just got the cheap tyre to get through the MOT and then replace it when it convenient.
