gtx970 or r9 390 for 1080p

It's the same GPU, but not the same graphics card so nothing inaccurate at all

I was using the term gpu more loosely than you. A chip is a chip, I was on about the platform as a whole thinking you was to. If you ask AMD they claim the chips different but I've always been on the Hawaii chip is a Grenada chip side of the discussion as all the real improvements/changes are on the pcb.

graphics processing unit: Okay I'll have to be more careful how I read and word it in future.

Noise is a big factor for me as its in the main room but then... Would the 390 be as noisy as my msi7950 tf ?

Here's a noise test of the 390X. Seems pretty quiet and I would expect the 390 to be even quieter. For normal web browsing, watching video, etc the card will be totally silent since the fans don't run at low load.

I have a MSI 390 & I think its great. The extra vram is nice & I think it is now favoured as the slightly better card by most at the price point. The 970 is a really nice card too though & used to be the choice

I don't think you will lose out either way.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, I don't favour AMD or Nvidia, I like to get the best bang for buck so have had a ton of cards from both suppliers over the years.

Saying that, I am put off AMD a bit as I'm sick of them keep re-badging the same old cards, I know there are some improvements but I still feel like I'm being done over if I spend £250+ for a card that feels like old tech.

As I'll be gaming at 1080p too I'm wondering if a 380 or 960 might be the better option for now, what do you guys think?

thats what's putting me off the AMD yes I know its got 8gb and its been reworked but... its still old tech!!

its also the power usage that put me off yes ive got a 750watt psu but my thoughts is with the 970 i could go sli through time and might still get off with my 750watt psu
Ive read a few reviews that say you need a 750watt psu to run some single 390's!!

Did you know the AMD GCN based cards all support DX12 in hardware (including Async compute) while the Maxwell cards do some of the stuff in software? Arguably the 'old tech' will be the one that last longest.

Check out any DX12 benchmark and see how a 970 compares to a 290X/390. The hardware feature set also explains why the AMD cards use more power.

I was in the same situation a month or so ago, and chose to go with the gtx 970 g1. So far it's been almost totally silent - quieter than my windforce 7950. Temps wise it has been fantastic, reaching the maximum of 62c. I also have not had any issues with drivers or vram problems at 1080p.
