Following on from my thread here I have narrowed it down to these two. I appreciate that at the moment I do not have a suitable GPU for 4K but that will come.

The two are.

Philips BDM4065UC

And the,

Dell UltraSharp U3415W

Both over budget but I have managed to source a bit more.

So recommendations please.

The Dell is a really nice screen but just remember that you will be forever fiddling with ini files etc to sort the res out on many games that don't support 21:9. Even new releases are still not fully supporting super wide screens such as MGSV, Fifa etc.

I had the 29" Dell when they first came out but eventually got fed up with all the custom res fiddling that I got rid of it within a few months.

Furthermore with that 34" Dell the IPS glow will be far more noticeable at that width.

Don't get me wrong with games that support it natively it can be more immersive.

I was considering a 34" ultra wide but when the Philips became available, I went for that instead.

Eight months on and I'm still happy with the choice. A lot depends on the kind of games you play. I play sim racing games mainly and a large high res screen is ideal for that.

When I play stuff like Witcher 3 and Shadow of Mordor, I use an ultra wide res (3840 x 1648), black bars top and bottom. It makes it equivalent to a 37" ultra wide monitor. I do that because you get a bit better FPS, nicer FOV and my steering wheel slightly covers the bottom of the screen because I prioritised the monitor position for sim racing games. It's more immersive to use the full screen though. You'll have to wait for the next gen of video cards to play these games with high graphics settings at 4k res.

For desktop use it's excellent, there's no need for Windows scaling, you can fit lots of stuff on screen and it's really great with programs that have a lot of UI like video editors.

Its not ideal for Shooters though. So the Question is what the OP plays.

I have been considering the Philips but the PWM has me worried as I used to get terrible headaches from an old monitor that used PWM. Also looking at the owners feedback on here there seems to have been an awful lot of issues with QC and panel uniformity etc.

However a 40" 4k screen at that price is very tempting. I find anthing under 32" too small for a PC screen.

So no consensus then? As for games mainly action Far Cry Fallout and the like and shooters.

As I suffer from radiation fibrosis I am think that with the screen a maximum of 30"/760cm then I might have trouble viewing the full screen without tilting my head back and fourth constantly.
The 40" is also 4K and I will not be able to upgrade my graphics card to something that will handle 4K well but on the other hand it is a bit of a future proof idea perhaps to get the Phillips now. I think one of my local stores sells the 40" so may go and have a look and see how my fibrosis copes.

I have both a Phillps 40" 4k and a LG 34" 1440p UW...
The UW very rarely gets used out of the two...
Nuff said... ;)

Why is that and what type of games do you play? Do you do something similar to the other guy by using UW resolutions when gaming?

Its because the 40" size, clarity and black levels of the 4k resolution on this 40" screen is just so damn powerful and gorgeous that, it over-rides the enjoyment of an IPS panel ultra-wide screen in 1440p...

As long as you have the grunt to push the games in 4k properly at ultra settings at 60FPS/60 HTZ!

I play casual gaming generally more and stuff like Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, Mad Max, Batman, Titanfall etc etc and the Star Wars Battlefront beta just look INCREDIBLE! in 4k...

It's also way better for the watching tv shows... 16:9 full screen at 40"... perfect!

Just my thoughts on having both monitors sat next to each other... 4k is the go to for me!

Ps: I don't need to play UW resolutions on the 4k as I've got the UW already :D

Thanks for the reply, I didn't notice the SLI TitanX cards :p

I have a projector which I use for films etc so I was looking for something for games really... but if the image is that much better on the 40inch, I'm not sure what to do. I think I've resigned myself to waiting another year.

I use a 3D projector and 100" screen for films also...
Just finished watching Terminator Genisys actually...

But for downloaded tv content like the latest Walking Dead I'm about to watch... The Phillips reigns supreme over the UW for 16:9 in 40" size...

I live in Dunfermline and have both of those monitors' come over and check them out in person!

I'd probably go on eBay and buy a Korean version of the Philips for about 370 quid

A very kind offer but one I cannot take up unfortunately. I would certainly welcome your views on them though. I think it will be the Dell as medical reasons will make the 40" rather painful to use. Thanks again.

I have had both, currently have the dell 34inch.

I couldn't get used to the 40 inch but that was the most enjoyable out of the two for gaming. the 34 inch is easier on the eyes and you will get better frame rates with your 980

The dell does has better colour compared to the philips as its an IPS, but its down to what you are looking for in a monitor.
