London to Shanghai by bicycle: Complete!

Just absolutely, undeniably, mind meltingly epic.

I've said it before, but you truly are winning at life!

What an acomplishment - let it be a reminder to us all of what's possible with our lives.

wow, just wow :)

gonna guess, schwalbe marathon tyres? and omg your poor sit-bones, saddle used?

A Brooks leather one I believe... Not 100% sure on tyres but think you're right.

I'm still in awe of this achievement after revisiting a couple of pages last week... Really serves a reminder of what we can achieve, if we set our minds to it! :D

Need more blogging James, or a taster of what's in the book! How is it progressing?

This along with Messiah Khans thread is inspirational as ever.
Feeling the need to do some exploring more than ever. Need to grow some balls, how do people just quit a job.

Yup a Brooks flyer with springs. Wish I had gone for one without springs though. They are prone to squeaking every now and again.

Slowly. I haven't done anything on it in a while due to a big project at work. Need to get stuck back into it!

An average of 30-ish miles a day. Impressive!

I think it was 50 miles + on cycling days. It got brought down a lot due to time spent getting visas, illness and the like :).

That really is the toughest part. Was made easier by working for a company that was going under. On top of that my skill set is quite highly in demand at the minute so picking up a new role would be fairly easy. I ended up getting a job within two weeks of returning home at the end of the trip.

How did you go about planning it and working finances, camping laws, logistics and everything else out.

I worked on a distance of 10,000 miles total. I built a spreadsheet that I logged daily mileage in (including days off) and thus estimated my average daily mileage. I divided the remaining distance by my daily average to determine roughly how many days were left of the trip. I then divided my remaining budget by this figure to get a daily budget.

Visas were tough too as many countries need specific dates. I used the above figures to estimate when I would get to the borders :).

Is it still safe to do this route with all that's going on?

How were things in Iran?

Yeah the route I took is still safe. Iran was amazing, lovely place.

Congratulations it must have taken a lot of metal strength to complete your journey. Lets us know you hold when you recreate your first day again :)

The first thing I want to do when I get back to the UK is recreate that first day and see how I hold up now.

Haha I did recreate it about a year ago. The first day of the trip was 80km. I did 65km to get from my new house back to the original start and then did the first day on top. 145km and felt good enough to go to the pub after :). On the first 80km day I was dying by the end!

Well I've done it!

10,650 miles, 364 days, 20 countries.

That averages at 29.25 miles a day  I don't think I could ride that in a day nevermind average that everyday for a year.

Serious congratulations and a massive achievement to have done it.

Edit: Just realised OP is over a year old, some how missed this the first time around.

That's a tough one as I didn't end up in many touristy bits just random towns. Zanjan was my favourite town probably. Stayed with a lovely family, met quite a few people and ended up giving some lessons in an English language school.

I'm going back next October to the more touristy bits (Esfahan, Shiraz, Yazd). Highly recommend it!
