Hi please help. I have decided to go down the skylake route. please could you help me deciding on which motherboard to use out of the 2 micro boards below. I am planning to overclock so Would I benefit going to the dearer asus motherboard or would the gigabyte be good enough. also thinking off reliability.

many thanks

Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming 5 Micro ATX Skylake Motherboard £133.40
Asus ROG Z170 Maximus VIII Gene Skylake Micro ATX Motherboard £167.40.

I heard of some stability issues with the Asus board which made me go for the Gigabyte one, not sure if that is still true. The later does have twice as many bios releases as the former now.

I have the former and am happy with it, the Asus will have better fan control and potentially a few more overclocking tweaks. The gigabyte can't up the bus from 800 to 1ghz still for example.

hi thanks for your reply. I am only going for a basic overclocking to 4.5-4.7 would there be a need regarding upping the bus. only asking as trying to keep the costs down, that's why I am leaning towards the gigabyte board.

System agent clock

Ive never seen this.

Usually to overclock you either increase the CPU ratio or increase the bclock.

All Z97+X99+Z170 boards default bclock value is 100Mhz it is what the CPU ratio is multiplied by to reach the core speed (100X40 = 4Ghz for example).

From what I read it can help with graphics intensive tasks and it'll give 1-3% better performance. It was the default but they dropped it down on all boards due to some compatibility issue which has since been resolved. The cpu is pretty much just multiplier in my experience but most of the clocks speeds aren't linked. Some boards have already patched in an option to put the agent clock back up.
