THE FOG

Whenever it's foggy I put my fog lights on, because honestly - if you're not gonna use them when its foggy, when will you?

Depends on visibility/how bad fog is, normal lights are fine in some situations and won't mask your brake lights or dazzle other drivers.

Some people don't have the common sense to turn on their lights when it's dark let alone expect them to use fog lights correctly.

What gets on my nerves is people driving on the motorway during heavy rain with their rear fog lights on. Makes seeing their break lights so much harder...

I do see a lot of people chancing it without lights tho. Proper annoying as depending on the angle you don't even see them at a junction or whatever.

But do you only turn them on when needed IE less than 100meters.
And do you turn them off when the fog clears past that range.

That's what's been peeing me if the last few days, idioms with fog lights on when it's not where near down to 100m and leave them in even when out of fog.

I know it's been worse in the south east, but round here no one should have had their fog lights on. No where near the limit for them.

When I say foggy I mean reduced visibility, dunno if 100m but reduced enough that you cant see reliably in the distance. I don't put the fogs on for a slight bit of mist in scotland when I'm in Manchester :p:p

Take the lights away from the driver, you get automatic wipers etc these days, so maybe new cars should be fitted with some type of sensor system that turns the lights on/off when they need to be, both normal and fog. it's just a thought.

My car has auto lights/wipers but like anything it's not perfect and I override things from time to time, people just need to pay more attention with fog/visibility, I imagine fog sensors could be quite difficult to get right.

Many are, they're called automatic headlights. ;)

However they are not perfect and sometimes they won't turn on the lights when they would be advisable, it varies quite a bit depending on the manufacturer and age of the system. Ultimately it's still up to the person in control of the vehicle to make sure such things are configured appropriately.

Personally I've always used a very simple rule of thumb, if I can see the backlighting on the dash even faintly, the lights go on.

My car's manual explicitly states that the automatic headlights will not function correctly in foggy conditions and says you should switch them on manually. People don't always read their car manual though do they?

Dip beams at least, although theres plenty with no lights at all.

Other thing grinds my gears is folk who dont pull in to let an ambulance pass, or who then use the opportunity once it has passed to jump a few spots in the queue. You'd be damn sure that wouldn't happen to the police.

Equally as bad are the people on the contrary to the above who insist on pulling over at the first inkling of a blue light without even thinking it through and realising they're blocking the ambulance from actually passing them, or causing all traffic behind them to back up. There are also the people who stop on the opposite side of the road going the other direction. Just pull in when and if it is safe to do so - otherwise keep on moving so the emergency services can keep moving also! It isn't hard to understand.

People are morons.

From highway code:

Rule 234
Before entering fog check your mirrors then slow down. If the word ‘Fog’ is shown on a roadside signal but the road is clear, be prepared for a bank of fog or drifting patchy fog ahead. Even if it seems to be clearing, you can suddenly find yourself in thick fog.

Rule 235
When driving in fog you should

use your lights as required (see Rule 226)
keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front. Rear lights can give a false sense of security
be able to pull up well within the distance you can see clearly. This is particularly important on motorways and dual carriageways, as vehicles are travelling faster
use your windscreen wipers and demisters
beware of other drivers not using headlights
not accelerate to get away from a vehicle which is too close behind you
check your mirrors before you slow down. Then use your brakes so that your brake lights warn drivers behind you that you are slowing down
stop in the correct position at a junction with limited visibility and listen for traffic. When you are sure it is safe to emerge, do so positively and do not hesitate in a position that puts you directly in the path of approaching vehicles.

Not sure how enforceable it is but like many have said, it's common sense which many drivers don't have.

I thought turning on your lights during heavy fog was just common sense?

Some people were released I surmise on beta with common-sense missing from their basic feature-set. Can only hope for a future service pack to correct this or intervention by the police before the fault causes serious harm.

It still amazes me there are a lot of modern cars that don't have fog lights that turn off with the ignition, so the fogs aren't on the next time you drive unless you press the button again.
bugs me, days after when cars are still driving around with the fogs on when its not foggy

It's just silly little chavs who think they look cool. Pathetic.

I liked the part where morons use high beams and ruin whats left of the ****ing visability for themselves and everyone else.

People who don't turn on their lights because they think they DRL LEDzzz are enough should be shot.
As should those who drive around with front and/or rear fogs in perfect visibility. FUUUUUUU

As mentioned, lots of cars have these already (mine does). In some ways it's worse though, as you forget about your lights rather than getting into the habit of turning them on and off, then they don't work in fog (as then sensor thinks it's bright) so it's easy to see how it can happen.

100%

The number of times (slightly off topic) I've seen drivers with sidelights/DRLs on at dusk/night is just insane. Just because you can see the dash of your car doesn't mean the other drivers can see you!!!!! It's the first thing I do when I get in my car is check the lights - although I have been driving for 9 years so it's pretty much ingrained now!
