Hello, my friend has just ordered a prebuilt 4k gaming PC consisting of a x99 system with sli 980ti from his local PC shop, he cant decide on the monitor though.

The shop has given him 2 options for their best gaming monitors, a 27" ROG SWIFT PG278Q G-SYNC and a Acer 27" Predator XB270HUbprz IPS, should he take one of these or are their better options out there. Its purely for gaming, any help is appreciated.

Ta.

Yeah, hes just spent £3k on the PC for 4k gaming though so probably wants to give it a go :) , for 1440p he could have gone for the skylake single 980ti system and saved him self 1700.

Yeah they aren't 4K, but they are probably the best gaming monitors out right now.

ASUS have a ROG 4K on the way IIRC, there's the Phillips 40" which would be my choice (though it's not G-Sync), and I'm pretty sure there's an Acer out at the moment. There are also options from Dell which gives you good quality, but again no G-Sync.

Yeah, i mentioned theres a new RoG4k coming soon, and he can just run DSR till then so he said he will wait for that one.

Cheers all.

The X34 isn't "1440p" - it's 1440 ultrawide, ie 3440x1440 opposed to 2560x1440. I've just moved from a 2160p (4k) to the Acer XR34 (FreeSync version of X34) and I'm glad I moved. Doesn't feel like an "up"grade though, more like a diagonalgrade - I do miss the sharpness of 28" 4k but I do love the extra width of 21:9 aspect ratio and freesync so.. swings and roundabouts really.

Essentially, tell him to look at the Ultrawides that have started appearing as well as the 4k scene. For gaming and movies I'd be inclined to say the Acer XR34 is the better choice, for "productivity" I wouldn't know because I don't subject my pc to that kind of torture :P

Hah, I totally overlooked the £3k part. I'm not even sure I could sensibly spend £3k without wasting money.. My rig must have set me back ~2k, where's the extra 1000 gone in his? O.o

Either way, my previous recommendation of 1440 Ultrawides still stands - or 1440p ultrawide. 4k was nice for slower paced or third person games, such as Witcher or Dragon Age - but not so good for faster games like Rocket League or CSGO - so I guess his choice stems on what he plays. Though I must say the ultrawide views in games like Dragon Age/Witcher is super duper sexy too ;D

With a £700 CPU (5960X) a £350 motherboard (Rampage V Extreme) and 2 £550 Graphics cards (most 980 Ti's) you're into the £2200 realm with no ram, case, hard disks, cooling, build costs...
The only thing that's a "waste" of money could potentially be the 5960X over the 5930K but that only drops the cost just under £2000.
I just bought a 4k monitor (Philips 40"), but I do feel that it totally depends what games you're playing.
I'm going to keep hold of my g-sync monitor until I can buy a good new one (when a good new one comes out).
I will continue to play FPS games on my G-Sync until I can get a new one.

I've got a 40" (not the Philips) UHD VA monitor sat next to an Acer X34 21:9 display.

I've run Wither 3 with the same settings on both monitors (1440 borderless window on the 40" monitor) and switched back between them. With one 980 Ti even when dipping down to 45 fps on the 60Hz UHD monitor it was smooth with no tearing or stuttering so was very enjoyable.

Then switching to the X34 it was a very similar experience but the extra refresh rate and G-Sync meant it was that much smoother when panning and noticeably more responsive to inputs.

So unless your friend would prefer the pixel density of a 27/28 4K UHD monitor now then I would look at a 34" 21:9 now and wait for higher refresh monitors above 1440 in the future.

I've got my eye on the Acer Predator XB271HK, hopefully it won't be too long.

The way i see it, it'll be quite a while until i can play games at UHD resolution much higher that 60fps without crippling the quality and effects (where's the point in that?). So in the meantime, a 60hz G-Sync monitor would be fine.

Hopefully in a couple of years we'll see 120hz UHD around. There's see no reason to go any higher than 120hz.

I'm really tempted by the AMH 409U however I think that 40" might be just too big to sit in front of.
