980ti or G-Sync monitor??

OK, conundrum time.

As per my sig: I have a 780ti and 1440p 60hz non VRR monitor currently.

I'm considering treating myself either during the Black Friday sales or for Christmas. I'd like either a graphics card upgrade (980ti being the obvious choice) or a G-Sync monitor. Due to my budget I can really only afford one or the other (budget includes monies accrued by selling existing stuff).

I've already Googled this question as you would expect...haven't really found a satisfying argument.

Has anyone here made a similar jump in the past few months? What does everyone think?

I'd go for the monitor first personally, the 780ti is already well equipped for most things at 1440/144 with gsync, then get saving for Pascal :)

780Ti is beast I'm not sure I should have given mine to my brother

I'd say it really depends on the difference between the two monitors though
which is difficult to tell without using it, I wish there was some sort of place where you could go and test out different monitors

780Ti is almost half of a 980Ti.
There's so much going on with G-Sync screens that I would wait for the dust to settle (30+ inch below 700£, you already have a 27 1440p, I think you want a substantial upgrade) and go for the safer purchase, 980Ti.

Even a 980Ti can't max out some games at 1440p.

Regardless of same screen size and resolution, 144hz and especially gsync is an off the scale comparison upgrade.

Remember with gsync/freesync you no longer have to aim your frame rates at the higher end of the monitors refresh rate, even 40-50fps is buttery smooth.

It looks like a majority in favour of the monitor upgrade. I do wish I could go somewhere where I could test run it first though. If I can just find a way to run Skyrim with mods and enb at rock-solid 1440p, 60fps I'd be happy :-)

The only thing that's putting me off G-Sync is that I can see us all on 4k 40"+ Freesync displays in a couple of years time, with Nvidia either adopting the tech or someone, somewhere hacking display drivers to allow this to happen anyway.

I know this is only fanciful conjecture but it's food for thought.

No one can say for sure how the Freesync vs Gsync thing will play out (wouldn't be surprised at all if Nvidia stick to their gun and continue to force their users down the Gsync path), but one thing for sure is that if you bought a 980Ti for £500 now, it's resell value will drop to under £200 as soon as 1070 is released.

Eh?

So, what price the 970 at that point... £50?

The will be EOL, and 2nd hand value probably down to around sub £100-£120.

There's still be healthy demand for 2nd hand 970 due to the sub £200 market has traditionally been offering fairlu poor bang for bucks for the pass few gens, so new graphic cards in those price bracket doesn't hurt the older cards 2nd hand value as much as new gen mid-range 1070 would hurt previous gen flagship 980Ti.

That sounds about right...a quick look around for used 770's would testify to that.

I'm not so concerned about graphics card depreciation though as I'd expect most people here would change graphics cards compared to monitors on at least a 3:1 ratio. I don't fancy having to swap out monitors on an annual basis as well! :-)

Another vote for gsync monitor.

I run 2x 780tis in SLI on the original gsynced-up rog swift. It's a classic combo, and for a lot of games one 780ti does a decent job. I'll be honest though I mostly use both cards most of the time. Lots of punishing games at high settings and I like my fps above 60 now if at all possible. Saying that, a fair few games are lucky to maintain 60fps at max settings at 1440p even with both cards.

You're right. When the 980 Ti was released, the 780 Ti gradually dropped to ~£250 new and ~£200 used since the 970 offered similar performance at ~£259 RRP.

When the 1070 or so is released (possibly similar performance to the 980 Ti), the same pattern could occur unless AMD's offerings significantly disrupt nVidia's prices.

I believe we'll see the 970 resell for ~£100 when the 1080 Ti (big pascal) is released.

I would say OP, get a new monitor first.

Cheers
