Free Movement Between, Aus, NZ, UK, Canada

I've already addressed this in my other posts.

Stay on topic please.

lol not really - at least not to the extent where it would justify a petition

sure if the election was run under different rules then you might get a different result but then it is also irrelevant to talk about them winning X% of votes if you're going to object to someone highlighting the rest of the breakdown of votes, it is hypocritical too - the important point is that they won a majority under the current system

you chose to raise the topic so don't moan about it if you're picked up on it

I'm not sure if he's actually saying that, but reasons against free movement that I think are valid are:

The number of countries I'd allow free movement with is very narrow and not based on skin colour. The fact the people I'd allow to come here freely happen to be predominantly white is simply because the nations I perceive us having the most in common with tend to be majority white.

Or to put it another way, can you name a non-white country which has similar living standards, a shared cultural heritage and common political outlook? Those being the things I'd consider being important to free movement being mutual.

You could argue the same about Jamaica or other ex British colonies.

hardly, we'd rather not increase the crime rate thanks

though I'd suspect that Caribbean islands wouldn't want an open door policy either for obvious reasons related to having a limited amount of land

Australians, Canadians and Kiwi's are for the most part of British extraction. Why would people object to their cousins coming to the UK?

Hah, this is the only comment I could be bothered to reply to. I don't know about you, but I know very very few people who can claim to have only English blood, and not have any mix from the rest of Europe. One of my grandmothers is Belgian, for example.

As such, they are as much our cousins as anyone else is I think.

This thread is utterly full of hypocrisy, my god.

Republic of Korea or Japan? Korea is a majority Christian country and they love football. I also came across a big Tesco the last time that I was out there. :p

It would be great to see but I'm not sure Shepherd's Bush could handle the influx.

I'm not sure that a majority of Canadians are of British extraction.

This, British ethnic origin is a minority in Canada.About 35% of Canadian self report British ethnic origin, but 16% French, 14% Asian, 10.2% German 5% Italian, 4% Ukrainian.
Plus every Canadian I know seems to be Polish by birth or ancestry. I'm sur ether is more Polish in Canada than the UK.

Even in Australia people reported ancestry shows British ethnic origin is a minority. Its just a case that Xenophobes and racists see white English speaker and immediately accept them as one of their own, even if they were of German, Polish or Ukrainian ancestry.

Japan and Korea would pretty much be it, yes. I think we should absolutely work on closer ties to Japan, which we have a great deal in common with.

The roman empire covered most of Europe and UK. Why would people object to their cousins coming to the UK?

You realise your remarks actually support my argument, right? The vast majority of people in the Roman Empire were not Romans, just as the vast majority in the British Empire were not British. We don't regard the French as cousins for the same reason we don't regard the Indians as cousins, despite us both being part of the same empires (at different times).

The majority of people in Australia, New Zealand and Canada were not only part of the same Empire, but they are literally of the same blood. They were British. We were never Roman and Indians were never British.

Have you ever been to Japan? We really don't have that much in common culturally. Don't get me wrong, I think that's a good thing, but apart from how rich both countries are, that's pretty much all we share.

This is sleight of hand at its best. The reason the figure is so low is because some Canadians identify themselves as being of Canadian ethnic stock as opposed to English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh.

We don't? We have quite a long shared history...

The majority of people in Australia, New Zealand and Canada were not only part of the same Empire, but they are literally of the same blood. They were British. We were never Roman and Indians were never British.

Again, I'd question whether the majority of people in Australia, New Zealand and Canada have much British blood in them. Canada has a large French-speaking community plus other large immigrant communities from Asia and the rest of Europe.

They obviously don't share our European tradition, so on the face of it we are very different for them. But I think that we've much in common in other respects.

Nonetheless, I'm not arguing for free movement with Japan. I just suggest they'd be a far better candidate than say Jamaica.
