Hi,

I have been asked to contact a friend in Spain this morning on a mobile number.

As this will only be a 'one-off' call I am not looking for anything permanent butd would like some advice on the cheapest way to do this, preferably from a BT land line, a Vodafone or EE mobile phone, or even Skype, although I would think the later option is only really viable for 'land line' numbers.

I have seen web-sites such as 'justcall.co.uk' where you dial another number first, followed by the actual number I have, but obviously I don't want to get ripped off!

Prompt replies much appreciated... many thanks! :)

If its a mobile number and it belongs to a smartphone owner there is Skype, Viber, WhatsApp and others that are all completely free.

Yup, if the person on the other end has one of those ^ services, do that. If not, a Skype call to a Spanish mobile seems to be nt$2.96/min, which converts to 6p. I can't get the site to tell me what it actually is in gbp, damn localization :p but not a lot.

Calling card? They're usually quite cheap for this sort of thing. Usually corner shops stock them.

Thanks for such prompt replies.

I guess it is actually a UK registered mobile though, as the number starts with 0796, but I don't know if it is a smartphone or not unfortunately.

I do have an account with Skype and have called a couple of 'land lines' in Spain recently, but assumed that calls to mobile numbers would cost quite a bit more.

Have to confess also, that I didn't actually realise that I could make a phone call from WhatsApp... I should obviously get around a bit more! :)

Edit: Just checked on Skype and it looks as if it would cost me 7.6p per minute, to either a UK, or a Spanish mobile number. As I have about £10 of available credit sitting in my account, that is probably the easiest option.

If it's a UK registered phone it doesn't cost you extra. The person in Spain pays to receive the call don't they?

Of course they do... as my son has just reminded me!

I am a silly billy, aren't I ... all I have to do is to call him on my mobile as usual... doh! :o

Job done... just given him a call on my EE (Lumia 640) mobile.

Call answered immediately, lovely and clear, with no delay... just what I wanted.

Thanks again for all your helpful... and some not so helpful ( ;) ) comments!

This.

At the end of the day you are still calling UK 079xx mobile number regardless of where it currently is in the world and therefore paying your usual rate for calling a UK mobile.

Exactly... just what I ended up doing in the end! :)

As he was in Spain, I hadn't appreciated at first that the number he had given me was in fact a UK mobile number.
