A "stranger" has a key to my house. Martin and Co don't care.

All this "will they pay for it" nonsense - honestly for piece of mind and reassurance just change the bloody locks yourself and worry about whos going to pay for it later on down the line.

Priorities man!

Always change the locks when you rent or buy a property as you just don't know who can come out of the woodwork with a spare key.

Even on rentals where they'll say your not allowed to, just keep the old locks and replace them again when you move out.

Changing euro cylinder locks is very easy and you don't need a locksmith to do it.

I'd lay a trap. Like a bed of nails just inside front door. But don't forget to pick them up. ;) It isn't assault if they shouldn't be there anyway right?

Aye I would change the locks (and bill them(, your peace of mind is worth the few quid it will cost even if they do not pay you back.

If the back door has a bolt on it use that and they can not get in that way even with a key.

What if you had come home and found the scroungers inside at the time, i would have battered them first then ask questions later :)

Is customer service - and I use the term loosely - via twitter something that companies actually do? I've never heard of this. Is it common or just used by those industries who don't want to speak to the customers whose money keeps them afloat?

Sucks to hear about your situation. The only thing I can chime in with, is that I hate Martin & Co.

They give you all the time in the day when it involves setting up a deal where they can make money, but the second you want support it's always a nightmare.

I will never go back to them as a result.

This.

I find it very odd. Plus the fact that they have no idea as to whether it is breaking your tenancy agreement or not is a bit strange... surely that is one of the basic things they should know?!

Locks are easy to change, I've done it in a space of 5 mins for front and back doors.

hope you get it sorted asap 5UB at least once the locks are changed and your the only one with the keys you will have peace of mind when going to work or out in general.

I've changed the locks myself already now, at my own expense...

I got a call today from the "builder" yes, a call back that was happening supposingly on Thursday to change the locks I was told at no charge, however if I were to change the locks myself I'd have to pay for it.

The builder/landloard/agency wanted to charge ME for them to change the locks today! Because the landlord apparently changed the locks to new locks before I moved in.

Even though the back lock is knackered and clearly not a new lock, and I have had no proof from the landlord they are new locks.

Martin and Co are the absolute worst letting agent I have ever been with, the social media Twitter page is abysmal for support, the local office is even worse. With so many false promises and lies, and no call backs, and no urgency.

Martin and Co have no care for their customers safety.

The "builder" on the phone started accusing me, saying I cut the keys myself. What sense does that even make? Why would I cut keys and hand them out to strangers? Are they joking?

If on Tuesday when I called up originally, they just called me back and sent someone over to change the locks, I wouldn't have been so angry. But this company is a complete mess, and a joke.

Good call changing the locks 5UB. I'd have gone ahead anyway without the letting agents permission.

Why not take the agencies quite appalling customer service further ?

I gave them the benefit of the doubt, I thought contacting the letting agency was the right thing to do, especially that someone has gained access to one of their properties without permission. - How I was wrong, and how they have proven to me they don't give a crap.

I've spoken to management in the local office over the phone, but, these are the same people who have let me down on call backs, and told me about the no charge of the lock if they were to change it themselves.

How much further can I go? - Are there people higher up then themselves?

Complain to them first in an official capacity, if you then get no result escalate to the ombudsman.

And the damp is not only 'their' problem, its also yours.
It can potentially cause a whole host different health conditions depending on how bad it gets, do not let it go.

Personally I'd have changed the locks when they all denied it and then when the first one hinted about it I know who to charge with theft or invasion of privacy if they fitted hidden cameras.... ;)
