Currently have a trusty 290X thats I had for 2 years now, plodding along at 1125/6200 on a hybrid cooler.

Game at 1080@60Hz on living room TV and 1440@60Hz on bedroom monitor, both running off a tower in the living room, HDMI and DVI-D respectively.

Been looking into getting a Pascal but that's not out until next year.

The 980TI I was looking at was the EVGA SC+ or a G1. (Why does the EVGA on have 8+6 power not 8+8?)

So is it worth it.....

Get a GTX 980 Ti

Small Pascal won't be worth the wait as it will be barely faster than GM200 and Big Pascal will probably not hit the shelves for quite some time.

I have the same monitor/TV setup (just in the same room) and came from 290's.
Yes, it is a very worthwhile upgrade from a single 290/x IMO, but only if you find that you want/need a bit more oomph.

Coming from a triple 290 setup, I don't really see a massive difference, though it is nice to have not far off 2x290 performance from a single card.
If I was coming from a single 290 or mainly played the odd game that didn't play well with xfire, I'd probably be wowed.

If you want a new toy now then It's maybe worth considering a freesync 1440p IPS monitor to go with the 290x while you wait for the next round of cards. Smooth out the frames of the 290x vs increased FPS of the 980Ti.

Depends how long you want to wait? i doubt we will see big pascal before end of next year. Hell id wouldn't be supprised if they didnt hit till 2017 which gave nVidia plenty of time to milk (AMD will do the same before you jump me but nVidia are known for it more)

It will be your pipe cleaner low end cards first then you will get mid range cards which will be hyped up to look like the big daddy cards but wont be and will look amazing with thier power usage etc but these will even be on par or slightly faster than current high end to try and get people to move on. This is the waiting period where milking happens. 6 months later full fat pascal will emerge.

This is how i predict it, either way nVidia would be absolutely crazy to release anything that is faster than current high end any time soon. Your going to be waiting around a good year.

+1

Best to plan ahead with the next gen cards.

My plan is avoid small Pascal altogether as it won't be much faster than the GM200 cards.

I will try and get big Pascal on day one launch as it will most likely be the Pascal Titan first up. Yes the prices will be high but that will be offset by several months of usage before the Ti version of big Pascal shows up. Even after both the big Pascal versions of the Titan and Ti are available it won't be a problem having the Titans as they are still going to be the better speced of the pair.

I will probably wait until you have a game which really taxes your current setup - also remember Pascal and Arctic Islands are on a new node.

The first midrange cards on 28nm like the GTX660 or HD7870 were matching or exceeding the previous generation high end cards too.

Keeping my 290X and hybrid cooler until it either fails or the next gen of high end cards are released, I've not yet played one game that causes it to struggle at 1080p at max settings apart from GTAV and even that was completely playable at mostly high settings, I'm getting a new monitor with higher res after Christmas but I'm just going to turn the settings down if it starts to struggle

Thanks for all the food for thought fellas :D

Black Friday is in two and half weeks, but doubt any 980TI's will be in the sale, can't remember any high end GPU's for sale last year.

I am on the same boat. I am really interested in the 980Ti, but my 290x with the Corsair HG10 A1 + Corsair H105 combo is just too awesome :p

Also not sure if getting a new 980Ti at £500 is worthwhile, considering the resell value is already as low as £400 now. If anyone want a 980Ti, it is may be better to considering buying 2nd hand, and lose £100 less when 1070 is released.

Unfortunately, none on the MM, was a quite a few over the past couple of weeks but now nada :(, but can get a new EVGA SC+ for £467.

I'm in the same boat, got 2x290x and using them at 4K but really thinking of going 980ti sli as I think it will be about another year before we see the equivalent pascal cards, how much faster are 980ti sli faster then 290x crossfire at 4K?

The main thing with 4K is being limited to 60fps, if you are not managing to keep a steady 60fps with the 290X's then upgrade

If you play first person shooters then if I was you I would get a 1440p 144hz monitor and keep the 290X's

Apart from Pascal there are the Greenland gpu's from AMD which are due next year too. At the moment no one knows which gpu will be faster/better so a bit premature to set you mind on Pascal I would have thought. The latest news says that GloFo are actually ahead of schedule with their 14nm process and already producing production samples for AMD.

We already know which ones will be more expensive though.:D:p

980 Ti, The 980 Ti successor is probably going to come out at the same time the 980 Ti did and based on current info so unless you're ok with waiting until next June *or possibly later* the 980 Ti is a no brainer :)
