...so the family have managed to lose the only set of VW Golf MK5 keys to a 05 GT Tdi. We have been looking for the keys for the last 2-3 months and cannot find them.

I was hoping someone might be able to recommend a place to get a new set. I contacted a VW Stealership and they want £150 for a blank key, then I have to get the 'locked' car to them so they can charge another £100 for programming +VAT.

There are some 'auto-locksmiths' online but not sure of using them without any recommendations on here.

If anyone could recommend a place close to Birmingham that would be great. If not I'll go the VW route.

You thinking that means theyve had to be carless for 3 months, as that's what I'm thinking. Do they have any cover on there car insurance for car keys. Also how do people loose car keys?

I only mentioned the time because some smart so and so would come along and say look harder or so.

I have no idea how they have been lost, if I knew we might have a better chance of finding them. With a 2yr old at home there are more than a few ways in which they could have disappeared.

With the eBay method the problem will be even if the fob is programmed by an independent I still need the key to start the car. Local key cutter will need the lock to cut a new key presumably.

Edit - just to clarify this car is not used daily clearly. It is more the car taken to the tip! Hence why the 3 months of looking! It's probably only worth £1500 at most.

Sorry, with the 2-3 months sentence I assumed you had a spare set.

I missed the "only" bit.

It is not uncommon for owners of "Pre-Owned" cars to only have one set of usable keys.

There are so many reasons to make sure that you have a spare! You do not want to wait until you are key-less to find that you need one!

If you do not currently have a spare then for heavens sake get one now before you actually "need" it!

And yes, the manufacturers/dealerships will screw you over for new keys!

On my previous car policy I could buy out the key protection even on the last day of my policy which was only 15 quid. I didn't buy it mainly because I could buy it at any point for that price at any time I wanted. :)

It wouldn't cover pre-existing losses.

Insurance after the fact doesn't work unless you lie.

No one will know, unless you're an idiot and tell them that you lost it before buying the cover out. They've no way of checking...
