Feedback on today's announcement

Yeah I was making a serious point, but now it's been lost by being starred out. It wasn't aimed at a poster, it was a word that I thought useful in the context.

It's just the same Rules as before just a lot more namby-pambyer.

You can have as many Rules as you want, the trick is to apply them across the board with both consistency and impartiality.

I always chuckle at the apparent ease of 'Offending' others on the internet when you can't actually give 'Offence' only take it and what offends one, will not offend another, and let's not forget how people are always getting 'Trolled' by others with opposite opinions.

Have fun moderating such things with impartiality and consistency!

Talk about making a rod for your own back.

Doesn't hurt to put up the 'mission statement'. I suspect the vast majority just follow the rules anyway, without really thinking about them. There will always be some 'special' people who see suspensions/bans as some sort of badge of honour (bit like an ASBO probably) but no amount of announcements are ever going to change them.

I'm afraid I missed the point then. Is there a reference lost on me here?

I didn't edit it because it was aimed at an individual just that it's not really language I like to see on the boards.

I was convinced there was a discussion a while back that resulted in stuff that got past the word filter without having to spam a bunch of tags in the letters to trick it was now acceptable.

It was a reference to an Australian road safety campaign, and a toned down version of Jim Jefferies's replacement for a bible. I think it's a really useful phrase since it's no less subjective than the mess that's written there now, but it doesn't almost present an idea that if you post on the forums then you won't be offended.

Anyway, run a search for the word and we can already see the consistency thing that people see as a larger issue than whether you have a fancy charter for an internet forum.

"don't be a ****head" is probably the easiest way to summarise the whole thing in a way that won't leave grey areas, to be honest.

:D
This to be honest. Basically have manners and use common sense, worrying this kind of thing has to be documented/formal so often (i.e. not just OcUK).

I guess it depends on how far reaching the offending rule goes. Obviously inflammatory posts should be deleted but that would fall under trolling wouldn't it?

Every opinion offends someone to some extent.

And this is why consistency is key, the Forum filter deemed the word acceptable, and indeed it is a harmless little word even when used in the cruder meaning of it, however it is a word one of the 'Admins/Mods' doesn't like to 'See' so they censor/censure it.

I'm not having a go at you personally Gilly, just highlighting one of this place's biggest problems - The consistency, is the word acceptable or not? Is it against the Rules or not? If it's not against the 'Rules' why censor it?
