Feedback on today's announcement

That thread got closed? Good! It served no purpose except for a place for the racists to pat each other on the back for gradually raising the bar higher and higher. There was no fruitful debate in there, anyone who had differing views were ridiculed, sworn at and driven out.

Open and free ranging identity? Yes, as long as your face fits, right?

Careful you're going to offend the racists .

It was a good thread to an extent as there was some serious discussion and some people raised some valid points.

Nothing should be out of bounds to discuss only the way in which its discussed. I dont mean toeing a popular line just general courtesy.

Such as life. Most things ruined from those of the few.

The tone was set early on and it went downhill from there. If that thread is still there, go back and search for the words 'idiot', 'retard' and other such derogatory terms. It's rife, and although not specifically directed towards individual members, most definitely aimed at a group of members who were trying to get their point across but couldn't due to the deafening noise of the echo chamber and paranoid imaginary-enemy rabble rousers.

I would have been more than happy to join in a discussion if it was reasonable, intelligent and not fraught with the language that was bandied around in there. In fact I had a post RTM'd and deleted because apparently if I have nothing constructive to add then I shouldn't post at all. The post in question highlighted the hypocrisy and doublethink style mental gymnastics of some of the people in there. If that's not a constructive post that emphasises the ridiculousness of some of the perspectives in there, then meh, I'm out.

There isn't a day goes by without it being done

In threads where debate is a bit close then you could turn up late and cherry pick any post and declare it so, but that is ignoring that people were at the time quite happy to give the same back.

Personally I've noticed that being offended is pointless because name calling is acceptable in here - the solution was to stop being offended and to not bother reporting anything. Or do a Castiel and just not bother.

I look forward to future debates where sycophantic people with no opinion on anything ask permission to post amusing memes, that may or may not have a bearing on the topic.

Anyway, I've had my say and picked out a specific example of where I think things could be improved. My point really wasn't that particular thread, but the way a select group of posters bring their agenda into other threads as much as they can and trash what could otherwise be a decent conversation.

I've gotta say I do like this new approach - especially the announcement re: swearing etc.. I've had a suspension when I had some swearing part way through a youtube video which I hadn't noticed. I also remember being suspended when I'd first signed up to the forums - it was a bit ridiculous as a warning could have been given. This sort of thing was a bit naff as far as internet forum moderation goes and it is good that its finally been changed a bit.

Personally I think the new disputes forum is a good idea though ideally it would be good if it there was simply an open forum to discuss issues like that.

I also think simple things like sticking a brief comment stating why a thread was closed would be helpful too. :)

perhaps, again in the spirit of openness, have a 'trashcan' forum - I've seen this on a few forums - essentially threads that would be deleted or locked get thrown in the trashcan - it gives quite a clear view of what isn't acceptable

So in other words you've insulted the people who disagree with you so that's the end of it.

I think the only real way to say what should be followed is what you have written, read it back before hitting the post button and decide if you would say this to somebody you just met in the local pub (say a friend of a friend) and only post if you would in real life say that

If people did this there would be barely any posts :D

If ocuk want to ban anything they within their right to do it no matter what. I just hope they not listening to a few whingers who insist on ruining everything for everyone because they miserable themselves and want everyone to be as miserable as them.

I do think that the anti immigrant sentiment was over the top when it starts entering other threads. I had my thread on open borders with aus and nz closed because people started calling people hypocrits and stiring up trouble, when I thought it was different topic all together.

Also the religious are obviously going to be a main group that moan when people point out how wrong they are and nothing going to change that as they are very vocal group. it's not easy to permit free speech and have religeous and pc sensitive people as well. It's not possible to have a balance this is why forums like ocuk rarely exist. Such a mix of people with diff opinions and so on. I'm happy with what ever they decide to do in the end and if it means we can't discuss immigration or religion how we want to. Then we have to find somewhere else to discuss it. To their credit they permit far more than a lot of forums of similar scope.

It's what I've always done, talk to people in the forums as if I were sat drinking coffee across the table from them in public place.

It doesn't stop lively or opinionated discussion in fact it allows to continue without descending into confrontation which would just kill the discussion and achieve nothing.

Feel free to RTM.

Never had a discussion with you, But this time you are wrong you are calling people racists online yet complaining about words like retard? You can not go around throwing out the terms like racism online.

It is not an insult, It is slander and just becauce a topic might feature discussion on migration or Islam does not mean people are racist. I would guess around 50% of this forum do not even understand what the word racism means.

Neither have I, but that individual's posts are still there, so what I posted is obviously worse than calling people neo Nazis.
