2560x1080p vs 3440x1440p PPI

I currently own a 27" ASUS 1440p IPS display (PB278Q). Also I have recently purchased a 980ti. I can max out the majority of games and get 55-60fps which is great. However a friend recently told me that he got a 120/144hz 1080p monitor and he says gaming is far smoother and feels better than a game running at 60hz at a higher resolution.

I have seen an Acer monitor coming out soon (Z35) I believe which has 35" G-sync, AMVA3 panel, 200hz? and a resolution of 2560x1080p and Acer also have the X34 which is a 34" IPS panel with 3440x1440p resolution with G-sync.

Both look great but my question is if I were to go for the Z35 would I notice a massive difference in IQ due to the larger screen size and lower resolution compared to my current 1440p monitor?
While I have not gamed at anything higher than 60hz in my mind I would much prefer to game at higher frame rates with in-game settings set to high/ultra at 2560x1080 than lower in-game settings with a lower refresh rate at the higher 3440x1440 resolution.
Also I am assuming 3440x1440 will put a little more strain on the GPU than 2560x1440 so in theory I would have to lower in-game settings to maintain the same frame-rate that I currently get at 2560x1440?

Keeping in mind the purpose of this monitor for me is primarily for gaming and movies, screen space is not important to me.

I think you would notice a fairly substantial drop in PPI. I think the Z35 would be something like 80 PPI, compared to what you have currently which is around 109.

To me that would be enough to offset the higher refresh rate, but really it's only something you can decide. I would only ever choose the X34 in this instance, but you need to see if any issues it has are ones you can deal with.

With regards to the strain on your GPU, yes for some newer games you would have to drop it. Off the top of my head 3440 is 35ish percent more pixels than 2560. That said, the X34 has gsync which is a massive, massive help.

I see; I have been reading about the x34 issues (does not sound good) but still if I have to drop settings lower than I'm used to then I would get less texture detail at a higher resolution which would look worse I guess, or at least more apparent. Also I have read that the AMVA panels have deeper blacks than IPS which is another positive for me as my current IPS monitor recently developed back-light bleed which is annoying during darks scenes in movies of games. Decisions, Decisions....

I hate having to play catch-up with the monitors resolution ever since I upgraded to 1440p from 1200p my GPU's have struggled (with the settings I want to play at) to maintain 60fps. Went from a 7950 to a 780ti for 1440p....not good, so got a 980ti nearly perfect for 1440p but every time a new game comes out got dial back some settings.

I think your right, I need to see it in person before making my decision. But I also think i'm still leaning towards the Z35 simply because it will increase the longevity of my 980ti by quite a bit imo. If I did settle for the X34 I would have to think about getting another 980ti to maintain performance and visuals I am accustomed to, and i'm just not a fan of SLi/Crossfire set-ups - too much noise/heat/compatibility/power consumption and scaling issues and most importantly the hole that will be left in my bank account. Don't know if I can justify the cost of an additional 980ti + X34....

same situation im in at the moment.

The Z35 is 1080P from what I've read and the guesstimate pricing for that is similar to the X34, again from what I've read.

I will find it harder to justify buying the Z35 over the X34 on pricing/resolution alone

Well from your sig I see your running 980ti in SLi so if I were in your shoes I'd go for the X34, more than enough power to more or less run all games using max settings at the native 3440x1440 resolution.

I ran some tests on games setting a custom resolution of 2560x1080 on at 980ti and I get on average an increase of around 20-30+ fps when compared to 2560x1440, which is great! Now am I willing to settle for that resolution on a 35" panel....I don't know.

It's pretty similar to the difference between a 24" and a 27" 1920x1080 panel. If you've seen that then youll know what to expect - noticeably softer image.

Similar comparison I guess would be between 27" 1440p and 1080p monitors, but with an even greater difference.

Having used IPS versions of both, 1080p was absolutely horrible, and any sharpness adjustments made it even worse.

Go for 3440x1440, you won't regret it. At full settings and 120% resolution scaling in BF4 with SLI 980Tis, I'm getting well over 100fps at all times (up to 130fps). Absolutely fantastic.
