im stumped.. why is a mainstream chip so much money?

can anyone explain the reasoning? apart from the upgrades we usually get?

also im assuming the skylake cost less to produce as they moved the voltage regulator stuff off the chip and back onto the motherboards making it even more of a money hungry upgrade as you'll need a half decent mb to do any good oc, when they first released I remember seeing it for 289 on special offer now theyre like 370 and on preorder?

is this a way of moving people to x99 or something?

Combination of factors

1) no competition at this level

2) 14nm has been a 'Problematic' process for Intel leading to it being late and in short supply.

3) Intel looking to recoup money on delayed and expensive process

4) lack of supply vs demand means retailers are able to push prices up as no incentive to sell with small profit margin when stock will still sell out at higher price

When it was first released, there was a pretty short supply of the chips. Which i suppose has had the knock on effect of upping the price. Generally at release the previous mainstream i7 chips have been around £280.00.

£300 still in the USA, £320 at Caseking Germany although they have ran out of stock, the company that owns/rules OcUK.

UK retailers all following suit and just charging what they like, because they are receiving stock in dribs and drabs, and no competitive CPU's from AMD.

They must still be selling well as retailers are still going out of stock, you know what they say... "A fool with his money are soon parted".

I'm waiting till AMD Zen is released now, it's too late to be buying Skylake now for me with Zen coming in 2016, it's not like any of the very latest games won't run on a 2500K anyway.

I would love it if AMD Zen is as good as Skylake, all of a sudden Intel will conjour up some new CPU that is 20%+ better, it's a joke.

AMD hasn't released a competitive CPU since the Phenom II though :p

Yeah, it totally sucks. I would prefer to be on AMD, before I bought my 2500K I had AMD 1700XP, FX-53 (£500 ouch!), Phenom II X4 955, then Phenom II X6 1090T. :)

Lots of people just want the latest CPU/platform, and are prepared to pay the premium for it.

I paid £320 for mine on release day, from OCUK, don't regret it one bit, as the CPU is perfect for my needs, and a huge upgrade from my almost 7 year old I7 920.

When you factor in how long CPU's will last you, £320 isn't a lot of money. These CPU's should last for gaming for 4-6 years easily, as Moore's law is practically dead and going smaller than 14nm will increase the cost tenfold over what we pay now.

I expect the 14nm Broadwell-E (X99) CPU's to cost a fortune when released, as these Skylake 14nm CPU's have an absolute tiny die (122.4mm2). Imagine the price of a CPU double or triple that size for the 8 core Broadwell-E? :D

Got myself a cracking bargin on a new sealed 6600k for £175 as I got fed up with the price of the 6700k to come back down,so my advice is look around there are bargains out there to be had.
I don't know who's fault it is why they have done this for the skylake launch but it's a bad move in my eyes.

Seems like a really bad time to upgrade. The fleecing is actually putting me off upgrading in the high end. X99 is desirable, will have to see what the market is like in january when the monitors I want are released. They are driving my whole upgrade. In the meantime I'm spending my upgrade money decorating my house :D

It's breaking my heart, I've every other part ordered and now find that the 6700k's are 25% higher than when I set out. Luckily I'm getting mine from a friend of a friend at intel once they get them back into stock (irony or what?) but I could barely justify paying the £300 GBP when it was at that point.

Please AMD for the love of all progress make the Zen something worthwhile!

It doesn't command that premium. You're just being gouged.

Well, luckily people are able to choose what to spend their hard earned cash on. Besides, £320 wasn't too bad for a launch day price for my 6700k. I've been enjoying it since August 5th, well worth the money for me :)
