Feedback on today's announcement

could have made it a lot shorter to be honest

rule 1. Dont act like an arse

the end

It could have, but we would've ended up banning half the members :D

Members can be arsey, they can rub each other up the wrong way in disagreements and things can get heated. Just don't try to cause harm or upset in what you say.

What if it runs the risk of damaging the rep of ocuk by discriminating against minoritys?

I'm not saying that's what's happened but if some one wanted to spin it that way...

I'm not sure I'd want to take that risk.

Is that in response to me?

I like to think that mature adults can see that we are trying to do all we can to allow the community to flourish. We will take on anything we can, we are open to suggestions of improvements or different ways of working... criticism that isn't constructive and is just whining at us and complaining that decisions don't go your way when, invariably, that happens doesn't move anything forward and has no value so should be discouraged.

My god - such serious business.

Someone offends you on the Internet? Turn off your computer and forget about it.

Someone bans you on a forum without good reason? Turn off your computer and forget about it.

I mean, OCUK is ... errrr, significant part of my life (:o), but do remember to exercise an appropriate level of care!

Besides I'm a level 15 doofus and in about 10 years I haven't had a single ban (afaik) because I haven't acted like an ass. It's not hard.

Same here.

in 12 years..neither have..I dont think...12 years is a long time to remember!!

but then I am not a prolific poster

I am long term member (12 years plus as well) in a few forums and you can tell the posters that try to adopt a persona

I am me! I am not an arse to people in the real world so why would I act in an arsey or confrontational manner on an internet forum

I can only conclude some people are just plain wierdo's!!

not at all I hold no grudge against anyone

but if someone wanted to spin it that way... could it damage the ocuk brand?

Why should they bow to someone who's happy to twist not only what's been originally said, but also the words and intent of Gilly to suit their own purposes into what's basically become a form of blackmail against OcUK?

Basically, if you don't agree precisely with my opinion, then I'm going to invent your opinion for you and tar the entire site with it.

problem is the forum IS associal ed with the business and. sometlone with a vendetta could cause trouble.

protecting the business should be the most important thing here.

Better shut the forum down in that case...

And then nuke it from orbit, because, y'know, it's the only way to be sure that nobody will ever say something that might be construed as offensive.

I get the feeling that you're missing the point entirely with the incredibly over PC outlook tbh.

No offense, but all I can picture is this

I suppose it could, if they were not mature adults capable of forming their own opinions.

I think people would rather see us being moderate rather than extreme, and not pandering to minorities however much they kick and scream. There are improvements we can make and that's what we are trying to effect, it takes time and a lot of effort, but we'll get there. I like to think that most people will see that.

my response to that does against the mission statement :D

Given some of the things that used to get posted on here 5-10 years ago, including by the actual owner at the time, and the pretty much non-existent impact any of that had on the growth of the forum or the shop, I don't think anyone is going to be too worried about whether a clearly not-intended-to-offend usage of the word tranny is going to bring the business crashing down.

I think the team has worked very hard over the last couple of years to improve the quality and moderating of this forum. Sure, we probably still have a bit to do, and will continue to do so, but looking back we've come a long way already. Let's focus on the positives. I'm not rose tinting it, I genuinely believe that this community is great, and is constantly getting better.

It is the members that makes this place great, but also the minority of members that can ruin it for others, as well as potentially over zealous moderating which we're trying to avoid anyway.

I'd love to create a place where everyone gets along, in spite of having differing opinions, but that's not human nature. There will always be people that don't get on, and antagonism will always occur. All we're trying to achieve is an understanding so that when things are enforced moving forward people can have that understanding/expectation of what is happening.
