When my wife's gran died a number of years ago she left quite a lot of bits and pieces. She left a lot of photographs, some going back 6 generations, which is quite amazing to see. But she was also a hoarder and left her a bag of old coins, some going back to the 1830's. Now I've done a little google research and I think there are some decent ones here but I'd like a bit more info. Any takers?

Best thing is just to check out coin sites tbf. Even basic coins like shillings can be worth a bit each. Pre 1920 they were made out of 92.5% silver so are worth more than the coins face value. Worth between £4 and £50 each depending on the condition (condition is key with coins) so can soon add up if you have a hoard like my grandfather had of over 200 shillings ;)

Then there are the odd super rare coins of every type where not many were every issued eg

1905 shilling worth up to £3,500 compare to a 1901 one being worth £70 max.

1850 shilling was another rare one worth up to £6k

Of course what every person wants to find is the 1933 penny. Only 7 were ever minted and put in circulation. Only the whereabouts of 5 is known with the other two currently "lost". Tonnes of fakes turn up every year though.

Estimates put it to be worth at least £80k minimum.

I've got a couple of tins full of old coins - shillings etc.. my Nana gave me when I was a kid as I'd expressed an interest in old coins

Yep seriously. There are some rare years but even in normal condition pre 1920 shillings are around £4 each and you might get lucky.

There are plenty of years where they are scarce (not rare) and worth a couple of hundred each.

I've found one in my lifetime. It was a very clever fake though. From memory I think fakers take a 1938 coin and scrape off bits to make it read 1933.

Was in an assorted box of coins at an auction. I suspect put in there by the seller so those in the know would massive bid up the value of the lot and take a chance that it might have been genuine. :)

Well there are 4 of them with slightly different head shots as the king wanted to see different ones and pic the best. These are worth 100k at least.

To be honest cause one has never come up in auction, nobody knows what a genuine one might be worth. Its the kind of one in a lifetime , must have buy to complete a coin collection, that might have two bidders push it up to a £1m.

just remember there are different grades of coins.

so some prices you may see online wont be anywhere near what you think they are.

just cause coins are old doesnt mean there are worth money.

really they want to be sliver or gold atleast.

ah OK - I thought from the previous post that you were indicating the non rare ones were circa £70

still £4 each isn't bad considering I've got a tin of the things

Oh they are if they are mint. Most years are £50 to £70 for mint coins but most coins in circulation aren't mint. Sorry. So £4 starter and more for better conditioned ones. Some of the rarer years might be worth £20 for a "normal" condition coin though.

Basically I'd google a site which lists and values for each coin for each year and assume everything is just average condition price wise.

Then if you have any rarer coins from a year, its probably worth researching/finding out how that coin would be rated condition wise to discover its value.

That will then give you a rough value for the entire collection. Keep the more valuable coins from a rarer year separate and then go see a coin dealer and haggle. Or sell them ebay if you can be bothered.

I had a load of silver sixpences when I got married - a few months in I asked wife have you seen those sixpences - Oh yes she said - used them for bus fare to work. - I never took any notice of the first sign.:(

Best place to look for old coins is old curtains as they were used to weigh them down.

Father in law once found curtains where sovereigns and half sovereigns had been used as weights :) That was a good year. :)
