Feedback on today's announcement

No women.. and only slightly less testosterone than a WI convention.

God dammit, wrong thread, well not entirely out of place, but still.

lafemmefatale found a term offensive, believing it to be derogatory to a group of people. That group of people itself seem not to see the issue as clear-cut as one individual does and now the mod team has to use discretion in this case as to whether we feel it should be allowed or not. This we have pledged to do.

What are you basing this group view on? Spoffle?

Simply googling for "Is Tranny offensive" suggests that there is overwhelming support for the word itself being seen as offensive.

The fact that it is used amongst themselves just makes it a reclaimed word just like the n* word.

There is no context in which using the n* word is OK by non blacks, so I don't see how any slang term for a gender/orientation/race is OK either. To suggest that a slang term wasn't used to give offence because of context is disingenuous.

I don't particularly like word policing because I see it as something SJW's like to do, but what I think I'm seeing here is an angry push back from a 99.9% hetro male forum because they don't like being questioned on their prejudices.

Just mentioning this again as you appeared to be prejudging the issue.

Where is there an angry push back? In terms of emotional responses I've only seen that on the one side, not the other side or even the centre, where we are discussing it.

If it was being prejudged we wouldn't have taken it on for discussion, I would've just made a snap decision. That's not the case.

It seemed pretty aggressive to me
And it is clearly an personal issue for her so an emotional response is probably to be expected?
I've done the same when someone "joked" about killing cats for giggles.

Seeing a one sided debate on what I'd assumed was a foregone conclusion makes me uncomfortable, particularly when I appear to be the only one left making the counter point here :/

Given the level of pussy footing we have to bear so as not to offend pixie people, the forum response to this issue raised an eyebrow tbh.

You'll have to show me the anger as I never picked up on it.

Playing Devils advocate of you are the only one pushing it, what is the reason for carrying on making the counter point? Fwiw you are not the only one.

Offence is determined by the person that is offended not the author of the comment.

example If you say a sexist joke in the work place and your female colleague is offended you are likely to find yourself in trouble if your female friend colleague sees it as a joke then so beit. Same goes for racism and other seemingly benign "jokes" it is about how it is received not how it was intended.

That's all well and good, but I'd argue that it's not the same thing and your example isn't the best one to use here, as a sexist/racist joke is a knowingly thin line to cross and if you were to do such a thing in the company of those who would likely be offended by it, then you can't really be surprised that some might not take it in the spirit it was intended.

In this case, he used tranny as a shortened form of transsexual in a sentence and it got taken as something it never was and blown out of all proportion.
