Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Never really found any practical difference between makes - perhaps time will tell. Generally go for 240GB for OS drive - 128 GB seems plenty - then time marches on and free space diminishes!

Has anyone managed to get a Gen8 G1610T to run with 32GB of RAM? If not, what are peoples suggestions for RAM?

Also thinking of upgrading the CPU to something with a bit more poke. What's the best CPU that will work with it?

Anyone using theirs with Server 2012 on it? Tempted to use it over Xpenology as I can get it free via work and I'm guessing it'll have more support and features.

been meaning to do it for ages...........get some new ram for my n40l, still running the original 2gb.

What's the go to dual channel ram for the n40l, either 2 x 4gb or 2 x 8gb, I don't really need 16gb I suppose.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

i just upgraded 3 of my microservers to win10. if you have the original bios then after the upgrade the onboard NIC won't work. it will look like its working but it won't and states the cable is unplugged etc. to fix this I updated the bios before (or after) using the info here http://www.msdonkey.com/server/bios-for-hp-proliant-microserver-g7-n54l/ ( i think the bios will work on the n36,n40 and n54 microservers)

hope this helps

Anyone suggest an add on Sata card that will work with the gen8?

I've populated the bays at the front and have a 2.5ssd in the ODD bay with the OS on it but intend to fit a schoondoggy type mount by the PSU so I can get another 2 drives in but I need more sata ports for the purpose.

running 2012r2 on it at the moment, dont require raid functionality as I've retained the drivepool setup from my n54l when I migrated over.

I use P420s so the management works with it. An appropriate generation HP HBA might work ok?
