My sister is looking to buy her first car. She has up to £8k to spend, and seeing as we have a family full of Audi's, she is pointing that way but I've told her there is plenty other cars out there.

Only a few requirements;

£8k max
Less than 2ltrs (mums rules)
Petrol
Good MPG ~ 35+
Manual

Any suggestions?

Is she confident that she won't reverse 8k worth of pride and joy.into a bollard?

Large amount to spend on a first car! I can't help.thinking a 20yr old girl needs to see what she likes the look of though rather than listen to an Internet forums critical analysis!

What's the reasoning behind the engine size restriction? It's not a reliable way to 'restrict' power.

Yeah, she's a good, confident driver. Not looking for anything set in stone, just suggestions as to what is out there! Her initial thoughts there £8k on a 2008 1.4T Audi A3, which I thought was a bit excessive!

Insurance is going to be the problem, not what she happens to fancy off the bat.

Get a list of cars that are £1-2k rather than £3k to insure then she picks the one she likes best from them and fnds a reasonable example

"I want an Audi" is irrelevant - unless that so happens to fall into the aforementioned list

Insurance isn't too much of a problem, as she is currently a named driver on a brand new A3, and rough quotes so far as having her own policy have been lower than that. But obviously don't want anything ludicrously expensive.

Sorry, should have said. Don't mind about doors, but hatchback yes, no big saloons or estates. Along the lines of A3, 1 series, Seat Ibiza was a good suggestion.

This. As it's statistically likely for new drivers to have at least one minor prang in their year, a cheap first car is a good idea.

She's been driving 3 years, just in her mums car.

Also I wouldn't say it's statistically likely to have at least one prang. Very few people I know have had any sort of incidents in the years they have now been driving.

If she's been driving regularly for 3 years then that changes things imo - it really is best she picks the car herself though. If she wants an a3 then just find the best one you can for the money
