MSI GeForce GTX 980TI Lightning & PCI-E 2.0

I'm thinking of buying a MSI GeForce GTX 980TI Lightning graphics card. Is this card compatible with a 2500K PCI-E 2.0? If so will I see much a performance decrease with it running at PCI-E 2.0 compared to PCI-E 3.0?

You may have to update the bios on your mobo to get the card to run.

As to using PCI-E 2.0, there is very little performance loss (about 1% or 2%).

I have a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard and I don't think any new bios has been released for a couple of years. I have 660's in SLI and they have run flawlessly.

You need to find out if the bios will run Maxwell cards before you buy.

My Rampage IV Extreme board needed it bios updating when I switched from a GTX 690 to a Maxwell card.

Perhaps someone with the same motherboard as you could confirm if a bios update is needed.

Thanks for pointing that out I wasn't aware that there could be a problem with maxwell cards. I have read a few forum posts saying that the gigabyte g1 causes a B2 error but not seen anything about other 980TI's.

Is there anyone with the same motherboard running a 980TI?

If there's such an issue, it will be with all 980Tis. Is about the architecture, what the vendor modifies doesn't matter to the motherboard. At bios level all 980Ti are the same.
