Upgrade advice, 1150 or 1151?

I realise x99 would probably be the ideal way to go but unfortunately my budget wont allow that. :( (£300-£400)

So that leaves me with an option i believe of either an I5 on a 1150 board with DDR3 or an I5 on a Skylake 1151 board with DDR4. I am looking to futureproof as much as possible but as the 1151 will only ever be able to support 4 core chips (correct me if i'm wrong) is that really future proofing effectively?

Some days I think id be better off with more bang for buck on an 1150 setup, and other days I think id get more "new" features on a Skylake board that would perhaps be helpful in the future.

I have a graphics card but will need new board, RAM and CPU whatever happens as i'm currently using a PC Ive had for 7 to 8 years and its done well until now, only recently started not being enough to play games (gaming will be its main use if that helps). Anyway over to you guys to help sway me one way or the other.... :D Thanks in advance.

1151 is more future proof i suppose as its newer than 1150, but for budget 1150 builds are cheaper in most cases.

Yeah Skylake is expensive as hell at the moment due to limited supply and high demand, some people think the extra money is worth it, some don't, that's my dilemma.

I would keep saving up tbh until you have enough for X99 for the extra cores, not really such a thing as future proofing, but surely the extra cores will come in handy in the future more so.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £352.07
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Maybe 8 gig of ram if you think 16 is overkill.

Also, do you need a cooler?

EDIT

You will save a lot on the MM (just noticed you should have access).

Hmmmm that looks like a good combo :) The more RAM the better IMO for future proofing, thinking about it I may need a new cooler, I have a big ass BLue Orb thing at the moment but its approx 8 years old and could probably do with updating, not even sure if it would have the correct clips for a modern board. :D

I'd rather buy new if possible for warranty reasons unless MM is crazily cheap lol not used it for years so i'm not sure how much cheaper it would be.

No, looks to be 775 only. There has been some good deals on MM, but not at the moment, that i can see.

Depending on your case size, get as big an air cooler that will fit or a AIO water cooler.

This is the same dilema I'm facing, although I don't expect to shell out for the components until the new year, by which point I'm hoping the price will have dipped a bit. I've noticed that the i5 6600k and the i5 4670k prices have fluctuated a bit recently.

Hi
I too am approaching an upgrade and was kind of banking on a good black Friday bundle. I must admit these damn skylake shortages are bloody annoying :( i could be wrong but the 6700k looks to be pushing £100 more than predicted at launch.

very tempted to look at an i7 4790k instead.

I'd say now is a good time to build a 1150 / DDR3 system. Prices compared to skylake get you a lot for your money. Should last a few years too. After all the Q6600 has lasted you a good number of years without being the top part at the time.
