780TI just gave way, with smoke. Ugh.

It's more likely the cable was the thing that caught fire happened to me recently a braided xonar dx cable caught fire.
No damage was done apart from the braiding burnt off the cable.

Just failed again, exactly the same conditions as last time. :(

Total system power off, refusal to boot with it plugged in and more magic smoke.

Anyone had any experience with repeat RMAs on the same card?

That sucks. They obviously didn't do a great job of repairing it if it's failed again two months later. Maybe push them a bit to exchange it this time, perhaps for a 970 if they don't have any 780 Tis on hand. You shouldn't have to keep returning it or risk the rest of your system with a card that's now failed hard enough to produce smoke twice.

I'd be pushing for a 980 or higher if they grant an exchange, this card is capable of beating a 970.

I've mailed them asking for an exchange as I have no faith that a repair is able to fix this kind of fault. Also, I think GB will pay for postage costs this time around which is a bit of a bonus.

Can you test the GPU in another system by any chance? Just keep at them because if your product is in warranty they have to either replace or repair it so you have a equally or better working product. Unless they refund it which then it's what it would currently be worth.

So keep at them mate. Hopefully you'll get something sorted.

Just had my RMA return from Gigabyte, went through another e-seller. Took them the full 28 days for me.

Was a direct replacement not a newer series. Red Team GPU though, might be different for Green.

*just seen it's an RMA on an RMA, they might just re-open the last ticket and replace it with something newer due to the same fault happening again

Fingers crossed.

Well someone at Gigabyte has had their Weetabix this morning. Mailed them at 11pm last night, replied at 8:37am this morning asking where they can collect it from. :)

Last time it went I tested it thoroughly i.e in multiple machines, with multiple PSUs etc. The way it went last night was exactly the same way, hard brutal power off with that scary smell of dying electronic components. So I'm pretty sure it's toast again.

What worries me the most is the brutality of the fault, it terrifies me that it's going to kill the rest of my machine when it goes and now it's happened again I really don't want to chance it. I dread to think how painful it would be claiming an X99 setup!

Josh - I've asked for a replacement, but they've said it's at the discretion of the repair team. Reading about the WF3 780Ti does seem a bit hit and miss, few reports online of them committing suicide. Like you say, here's hoping. See what the RMA centre come back with shortly hopefully.

edit - Collection booked for today, colour me impressed. :D

IME these recent Nvidia cards are built to last a certain amount of time if you get more out of them your lucky it all depends on heatsoak/useage if they go before the warranty expires.

That's what I thought last time, but it was repaired and they somehow managed to get the magic smoke back in!

edit - aaaand it's been collected by APC. 12 hours on the dot from initial email to Gigabyte to collection. That's incredible!

Lets hope the turn around is just as fast.

Customer service is a big part of whether I'd buy from someone again or not.

GB do top the service charts last I heard, just wish they would do the same wcing-friendly things MSI etc do.

First RMA contact 27th August, got the card back on 4th Sept. So 5 working days as there was a BH weeked in the middle of that.

Taken from their RMA doc:

Average turnaround time will be 2-3 business working days upon receipt depending on nature of fault.
Goes on to say:

- Users must troubleshoot with a tech support representative prior to requesting a second RMA.

- If a GIGABYTE technician concludes that the product qualifies for a second RMA, GIGABYTE will issue a call tag for the product:

- If the product is defective upon inspection, the product will be repaired/replaced and returned to the user at GIGABYTE's expense.

- If the product is not defective upon inspection, the product will be returned at the user's expense.
Didn't have any troubleshooting, just instant agreement to collect off the back of my first email. Guess the mention of magic smoke did it. :D

I must admit I've been very impressed all in all, especially today. The only thing that was a bit disheartening as per page 1 was the lack of willingness to say what was repaired on the card which makes me think they're going to repair it again. I reckon it was reflowed or something as I couldn't find anything that pointed at a component replacement.

Do hope they just replace it outright as I have little faith in that particular card now.

What's their position on WC then? Remove cooler, invalidate warranty?

Card has arrived with GB, 36 hours from initial contact to this point. Just in case anyone is interested in how long this is taking. :D

My 780TI Matrix Plat suffered a similar fate recently. :(

Thankfully Gigabyte warranty is better than Asus warranty because I'm not getting a replacement for mine... I gave up!
