This is my current spec:

Asus Rampage IV Extreme Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011
EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN Superclock Signature Edition 6144MB GDDR5 x2
Corsair Vengeance RED 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz DualQuad Channel Kit x2
NZXT KRAKEN X60 AIO Water Cooling Unit - 280mm
Samsung 500GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gbs Basic
PSU - think its a 1200w EVGA unit but not sure, def 1200w though

I run the CPU at a mild OC through the onboard Asus software
Titans not OC at all

Machine is purely for gaming and outputs to a 50 inch panasonic 4k tv (at 60Hz via displayport), OS is Win7 Pro which I like a lot.

I play a lot of graphics heavy RPGs & shooters and like to play maxxed out

The build is in a Cosmos II Ultra which I love and wont be replacing so space isnt an issue,

I am not very good at OCing so I tend to buy the best components i can afford and run them either standard or at small OC's, I also really value quietness and the build has full silent wings fans running at low rpm.

I bought the above 3 years ago so its time for an upgrade, I think the CPU especially is probably a bit behind the times.

I have looked (as i always do) at buying ready made but I really enjoy building the system myself and it saves a bit of money so I am looking to build a new cutting edge system but I am very nervous of custom built WC systems, I am however happy to use closed loop systems for both the CPU and GPU's (I am thinking I will go SLI again).

Dont need any peripherals so really i am looking for the following:

MB
CPU
Memory ( I am a sucker for flashy memory FYI)
GPU(s)
New HD's, would like RAID for performance this time around and will pay for best SSD's
PSU - If I need one

One last thing, i will probably be investing in a VR headset in the next few months if that makes a difference

So, over to you guys!

I presume with this rig you are playing maxxed out already? If this is the case, why do you feel the need to upgrade?

If you really have to, then as stulid said, swap out the titans for titanx's. Maybe add some SSD to the mix, and go for a nice water cooler aio for quieter operation. Other than that, your rig is fairly top notch for just gaming.

The CPU is still strong, it still has a core count advantage over Skylake.

DDR3 to DDR4 is small gains,

Skylake i7 DDR3 vs DDR4 - http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel-skylake-review-6700k-6600k-ddr4-ddr3-ipc-6th-generation/8

As for the SSD, your board doesnt have m.2 which is true, but realworld performance with a NVME Samsung m.2 vs your 840EVO again negligible.

When I put the system together I wanted to future proof it for as long as possible but after 3 years I have a huge upgrade itch to scratch and yet, it appears that things have maybe not moved on enough to make it worthwhile from your comments, do you think I need to wait for pascal and the next gen Intel CPU's?

As has been said, most of your rig is still fine. Gpu is the only real area of improvement but even that's not worthwhile right now imho. The current lineup of gpus are the last on the 28nm process and the drop to 14/16nm should see a significant power increase. If you can manage to wait 6 months I think there'll be a much better reason to upgrade :)

stulid beat me to it, browsing with tablet is long lol.
Anyway, my £0.02:

Total: £1,203.97
(includes shipping: £11.10)

I myself am a sucker for TUF/Krait stuff :D

If OP can't wait until Pascal hits, you can always add 3 EVGA 980Ti SC+ for £1.6K or 3 Gigabyte Titan X eXtreme (still preorder) for £2.7K. I'd personally wait for Pascal and Arctic Islands

Firstly the OP does not need this.

Secondly it doesn't even work.

Thirdly I think you should do research into PC specs etc before posting.

i threw a bunch of components together to see what 5k could get lol :D and so only did a little research..

all of it probably wouldnt work, but some would.

That was clear - but if you're going to do that, then at least add the caveat of 'i threw a bunch of components together to see what 5k could get' when you post the spec. It doesn't take any know-how at all to choose the most expensive parts and put them in a spec.

5k is a lot of someone else's money to spend for spending's sake :)

So if someone saw that and bought it thinking you knew what you were doing then you have effectively ruined their day.

Next gen (next spring) GPU's will blow 980Ti and Titan X out of the water. I would not invest £1000+ to a pair just to find it second class card next spring when GPU's jump to 16nm manufacturing process that will be a huge upgrade from the current 28nm models.

And well, Broadwell-E is also coming in a moment, so personally I'd just try to hang in there instead of building the god-rig right now.

I don't see any gains to be had on the CPU gaming wise and minor gains to be had from replacing the GPU. If current gear isn't enough, grab another titan and wait it out.

Next gen probably wont see you much of an improvement on the CPUs and only a moderate improvement on the GPUs with the benefit of dx12... if we get content that can roll with it.

Thanks for all the replies and helpful suggestions, I must admit to being disappointed on one hand that there appears to be little value in upgrading anything yet so i think i will take Dlites advice and wait and see what happens with pascal and next gen CPu's.

So frustrating when you want to buy new shiny toys :(

1st world problems eh?

It's aggravating waiting abit but the guys on here are really trying to help you squeeze the most out of your 5k. Wait a while and it may be worth upgrading when the new kit is launched.

If they do get it on 14nm then it should be a huge amount of gain since its effective 4x smaller die size (if my math is correct).
